We do get fill out an eval at the end of the year. The chair person or what ever his position is is stepping down. Next year's U10 will be on smaller team I beleive. I think the fear is this will continue.

I am rocking mission boss gloves. Have the ac2. They just feel like bauers to me. Shame I use to love their gloves.

The new STX Surgeon RX3 gear is out.
jmiro replied to ParabolicActivity's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I play a couple times or more a week. I air my stuff out after each session. The only peices of my equipment that ever really smelled were my skates. Didn't start wearing a base layer or socks till about a year ago. Plus i lost my faculty of smell about 8 or 9 years ago. -

I got the stallions hpr 1.1. I got mediums. They fit good out the box. They are more mobile out the box then my old high end vapors that at broke in. Biceps could be a little larger. At the level i play anymore i am more concerned with a random fall than a slash. That being said the length is perfect. Volume could be a little more. I have a "game" tonight. I'll update this. That being said I contacted St x regarding my fit concern. They said they had no problem creating a return slip for me if they didn't fit. UPDATE: Super pleased with the preformance. I gotta say as advertised didn't slip. Super comfortable and flexible. As far as elbow pads go this is as close as i have flet to wearing nothing. No pinching or binding. I honestly dig the the sleeve. The bicep strap is a moot point for me with the sleeve. The sleeve keeps it plenty tight enough up top. I will probably just tack it to the sleeve as it holds some of the pad in place so I don't see cutting it off as an option. -
I use a p30 and p46. I prefer the p30 for ball hockey as it is a more closed face. The p46 is what i use for ice.

When Did You Get Bored With Acquiring New Hockey Gear?
jmiro replied to beerleaguecaptain's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I got my kid pretty Set. Purchased extra stuff for when he grows out of it. He is very particular on fit, so now that i got that down were good. As for me. Now that I modded my shins to fit and sending my gloves for repairs. Still can't find a pair of elbows I like. I just ordered a pair of Stx. I think the only thing ill be in the market for is skates. Not over exited about the ones I have now. So when they are shot maybe 2 pair. One to convert to inlines and one for ice. But yea kinda over it as I don't see a ton of options or innovations I dig compared to what I have. -
thanks again for the feedback and support. Heck his coach even got me playing drop in again... My boy now is even trying goal. I realize now more than ever i am just along for the ride and time is already going to quick.

I am about to pull the trigger on a pair of hbr elbow pads. My issue is sizing. I have a medium pair of older vapors that are mediums and a pair of large nexus. The nexus are to big the vapors are fine in length but could use a little more volume. Any input. I am about 5'7 185ish -
So as the season closes I felt I needed to this thread. My son thoroughly enjoyed this season. The team he was on rolled lines no matter what the situtation. All the kids got equal playing time and played all postions. The coach didn't care about the score or rankings. They are finishing up the season with a 9-2 record currently. Win or lose the kids, including mines, attitude a have been great. The parents are great too. Even when they were getting smoked 11-0 in placement games with 4 shots on goal. At times I questioned my family's decision. The other team splits ice with my boys team for practice. I still see the coach making them do push ups or skate for messing up drills. I haven't heard him scream or curse but didn't pay much attention. My son and I went to watch his best friend play on the the other team. He got a total of 4 minutes of playing the whole game. There were several other kids that also saw minimal playing time. A couple kids were double shifted. The shifts for the kids that weren't seeing minimal playing time seemed excessively long compared to 30 seconds or less for those kids riding the pine. One parent i know made the comment his kid was the back up goaltender. Back up at U10. My boys best friends father confirmed that his child has seen approx. 60min of playing in 13 games and has since quit the team. I also witnessed the coach getting in a ridiculous screaming match with the red at the end of the game. I truly hope some of the parents on that team honestly fill out the scale at the end of the season. Once again this is a U10 travel that everyone trying out makes one of the two teams and are placed according to their "skills". No one gets cut as my boys ex coach reminded his whole team when rumors of my boy being cut circulated. The club has an elite team for this.

Cage, shinpads, and a cup when I am on the ice with the kids.

I love the perspective of what Is the benefit of a U8 and U10 travel or elite team. At least there is a huge gaping hole here needing to be filled. 1) kids that want to play can't afford it. Yea we got the learn to play program free gear and only cost 150. It's filled twice a year with 40 or More kids each time (just at this rink). But when it comes time to move on the in house league has little respect, seems unorganized, and is barely filled. The travel teams have a problem even fielding 20 players at U8 or 30 at U10. 2) pressure Santos nailed this. The kid that wants to go to the rink and hang out with his friends enjoys hockey but isn't a hockey player yet will fall through the crack and quit. Never had a chance to turn into a hockey player because pressure>fun. 3) time. 8 year old missing thanksgiving with his family because of a tourney. Not to mention all the other time spent traveling. I can't imagine being in a small market down south playing travel. Even with the amount of rinks in pa it is a daunting task. An important part of being kid is socializing, playing, and have fun. Any time there in the road is less time they are doing this. 4)fun. Some one said about meeting new people on the road. Sure but the benefits of inhouse or local league where you see the same kids. They get to actually make a semblance of a relationship rather than single serving friends( yes that's a fight club reference). Let's be honest when your kids at a tourney he usually just hangs out with his team if he isn't being rushed from game to game. These are important things at this age to learn. I think the documentary was called pond hockey. What i took from it is the fun and creativity is being sucked from the game. The best times i had, also some of the best learning, was when I got together on a pond or a roller rink and played some pick up with friends. To this day it makes my eye twitch when I go to a stick n shoot and a parent is having the it kid do drills rather than playing with the other kids and having fun. I will admit I wasn't always like that. Or my personal favorite "don't let your kid play online or dek hockey because it creates bad habits.". It's hockey with less pressure especially when it's pick up with their friends. My child was in skating lessons for 2 yrs and what helped his skating the most is when went to public skates and they played tag. Having fun. I Get it nobody likes losing and it sucks but there has to be a balance. I will say that our new hockey director gets this and already is making changes slowly but surely. I honestly think USA hockey hockey is starting to look at retention rates and taking good steps to grow the sport.

I have thought of that. His boy will be moving to peewee next year. There is a good chance in the future, if he keeps playing,he will run into. My boys new team and old team split ice for practice this week. I made it a point to at least approach him, shake his hand, and say Sorry it didnt work work out. He was brief, but cordial. My friend spoke with him about his boy and his concerns. He said he would work on it. We will see. As for my, kid the damage was done and he was done with the team. To be honest this may be the last season of travel for a bit for my son as this has also prompted him to want to try football and/or other fall sports. Which i am okay with. Either he can hang em up or at least play the in house. Some not so competive hockey may be real good for him.

Final chapter. I emailed the board. Made it strictly about my sons lack of expeirence and not having fun. I did speak the other coach prior, but made it only about my son. Apparently the other team needed players and he likes my son having coached him last year. Got an email today that even though this is not typical protocol they granted our request, considering other circumstance, and this may not happen in the future. My son is happy his new coach reached out immediately to welcome us and talked to him. We didnt have to go through a team manager. He starts practice tomorrow. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

Already paid up and logisticaly this is the only club we can do. Great news is he had a blast at roller today. I havent seen him have so much fun and skated so hard. What a laid back supportive atmosphere.

I preemptively apologize for the soap opera/train wreck that is to follow. Some of you wanted an update. So talked to the hockey director. He highly encouraged me to talk to the coach if not for any other reason out of respect. I tried to keep it about my kid, however was kinda pushed when I got the song and dance about that's were your kid was evaluated at. I tried the route that he is not having fun. I did minimize how much the coach yells and did say he curses at the kids didn't appreciate it. My boys best friend's dad, which I am friends, with comes in 3 hours after me. He make no qualms about the coach doesn't want his kid moved. He gets the same thing. He is less tactful than me and meets the coach on tuesday. A mother from the B team asked how my boy was liking it and I said he is miserable. Her reply was "I heard no one was having fun in that team." It didn't come from me or my friend. I speak to the team manager because I am told that everything must go through her. I get the same he is so nice and a good player. I email the coach. Now I am in a conference call with the coach and team manager that goes exactly the same as the prior two conversations. Looking for an end to this call I reiterate my concerns for my son being over his head and not having fun. What are My options? Could he change teams? I Get "talk" to the next guy in the food chain. In my opinion I gave this guy an out so he could recommend my son move to the other team. Now I am stuck talking to a board member. My wife says he not getting anything from this get a hold of the next guy. I suggest to my son that he should talk to the coach. He says all that guy does is yell and he would rather not play. So now I got to move up the food chain. I believe the damage is done even if things did change he doesn't want to be on that team. Which is a shame he gets along with the other kids. Now I look like that squeaky wheel. I just want him to have fun. At 8 years old he really can't effect change himself and to him it's a fun game that's not fun right now. I didn't let him try out for the elite team because he wasn't ready and doesn't have that compete level. On the bright side tomorrow he is excited to get invited to a pick up roller hockey tourney (which he only ever plays pick up with us old men) So I know for sure it isn't that he is burnt out on hockey.

Thanks this is what i was thinking. But wanted to see how off base i was. He is in his age group. He just missed the cut off to stay a mite. I honestly think most of the other parents dont mind due to lack of knowledge of the game, we arent in a hockey hot bed, also most of the kids on his team play the elite travel. Our in house stinks and there is a bteam that i had discussed my concerns with my son having skill and no knowledge with at "try outs" evaluations. Prior to practice he offered to take my son. Dont know if the offer is still on the table.

I am gonna try keep this short. My boy is a an 09 U10 age 8. He played one year of mite. So this is his second season playing. He did little pens learn to play, various camps, a ton of skating lessons, individual lessons, etc. He has an excellent skill set. This year they placed him on the top travel team because he has the skill. Only 4 09s made it. Please keep reading i am not saying this to gloat. He is great at individual drills. So tryouts he looks great. We are to months into practice and he looks miserable. Doesn't want to go to the rink anymore. So I ask him what's wrong. He is not having fun. Well to me that's the most important part. So I am paying attention now. He doesn't under stand the drills. He doesn't understand the rules. All the coach does is yell also curse. Making the whole team skat e laps for one person messing up on a drill. Won't let the kids try other positions. That's out of his mouth. My kid getting yelled at for going offsides. Not one coach asked him if he understood offices which he didnt. I am watching practice and notice that there is little to no "fun" it seems to be all systems drills. The coach is even isolating the 09s. He is telling them to get there "asses moving" and said that they all sucked today. This is not an elite team. He didn't try out for our elite team. Is the goal at this age to teach and have fun?? How can I make it fun for him again? He is eight and I don't want him to quit be cause of this.

BOTAS Hockey Skates - LARGO 571 PRO - FLEX FENDERS TECHNOLOGY
jmiro replied to Playmakersedge's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
Top of the line looks kinda like old pair of your skates. -
I was under the impression that the new lines weren't fitting like the rpds rather their wider lines... But it seems no one really has answers to what is going on. So I moved on from them. Kinda leery after the whole tron thing

I havent even considered the marsblade because its plastic. I want something i can play and practice in. I remember the plasic frames of the early 90s and dont want to revisit it even for nostalgia sake. Was hoping fizix or whatever it is called now would have the metal set out. But it appears at this rate that wont happen in my life time. So it is straight 80 alkali frames that just got put on my nexus 8000.

I am more appreciative of the guys who dont "have a dog in the fight". Politics are aweful. Then you add coaching your own kid which can be a lose, lose situtation. Kid thinks (maybe you are) being to hard on him/her. Parents think that your kid is getting special treatment. On top of which you might be a great mite coach but that doesn't mean you will be a great 16u coach or vice versa. When I have coached I tried to make sure that the other coaches were handling my child. Plus I want to see my kid play and not have to focus on everything else.
-
You can use the same drills as ice. Remember 8u is about skill development and fun. If it's not fun you'll lose most of them. Kids love scrimmages or small games too. Obstacles to skate around/over. focus on skating without making it seem that way. My boy is just finishing mites 8u ice. The challenge came in when you had a mix of skill to no skill. You will find out real quick which kids will assist the unskilled players and which will want to be Conor Mcdavid. Use that to your advantage and split them up appropriately when doing drills. You will lose the entry level player with no confidence pretty quick if you pair him up with little cocky Johnny hockey. Look at the USA hockey program for 8u. Shame that USA hockey doesn't support inline hockey anymore. It seems to be coming back in the area i am in. Just my Two Cents

My boy does skating lessons one to two times a week. When asked by other parents how he got good so fast that is my response. He is not the strongest stick handler or has the best shot, but he is not getting out skated. He also goes to every public skate he can. It's amazing what a game of tag of their friends will teach a kid. He is now part of the figure skating club as well. Which means he is wearing figure skates and getting coached by The figure skating coaches. His edge work began to increase almost instantly. I had to promise him that he wouldn't miss any hockey due to figure skating. This also gives him access to the ice that is specifically intended for him to work on skating. The importance of skating is lost on a lot of parents and kids. Most of the kids he plays with don't like working on "just" skating. My boy is the rarity, i think. Bottom line, kids need to learn to skate and skate well to have success or just have fun being able to compete. Glad to hear you guys preach this.

SOL.... You could find an ice boot and have a conversion done.

So only the top of the line has half sizes now? Also haven't seen them for sale anywhere yet.
