Once you feel the nut's seated, give it another quarter turn. Always found Tuuk holders pretty easy to overtighten.

Wouldn't be surprised if your steel was overtightened or put under any undue stress, especially if it broke in the same spot on both runners. I've been on Step for almost three years and haven't had a single problem.

All right, so upon further review of using Sk8-Fuel, the product has been making a difference and the on-ice performance is noticeable. I've skated with it, skated without it, then skated with it again, and was able to tell the difference. While not really noticeable on straight, end-to-end skating, I found myself in and out of turns and pivots faster than without an application. However, I wouldn't bank on the claim that the paste's film is 'permanent,' even without sharpening. After 1 hour of ice time I've been getting snow and slush buildup on the side of my blades... To be fair, I've been wiping off my blades liberally after every session, so that might have something to do with it, but I can't bring myself to store my skates in my bag without drying them off.

Upon further review... Took a decent shinny skate tonight without SK8 Fuel. Not sure if it was the late ice time, or that my legs were just tired (hadn't really done anything out of the ordinary), or that I had a fresh 90/75 sharpening, but I felt slightly stickier on the ice. I've been using SF the past three or four sessions because we have a tester available in the shop, but didn't notice a change then. I'm going to give SF another try tomorrow... let you know if I feel a difference this time around.

Lol... I never said anything about charging for a treatment. The kit itself is what's expensive. I was talking about something for sharpeners to do to a blade post-honing. For that, probably wouldn't charge more than an extra buck or two.

I've given it a good test run and haven't found any noticeable on-ice improvements. One of the claims of SK-8 Fuel was less buildup of snow, but I was still pulling slush between shifts and after skates. On the other hand, it didn't hinder any part of my game, either. After proper application, it makes the blade feel smooth to the touch, if not a little greasy. It's a nice little addition for shop guys to add at the end of honing, but probably isn't worth the MSRP.

I haven't been following this thread for a while because I moved overseas for work, but I've been back in Toronto on vacation for the month and have resumed my old Pro Shop post to kill some time. I'm actually quite astounded by the number of people who have really hopped aboard the FBV train. I'd say over 1/3rd of all sharpenings coming through the shop have been FBV. Several of my regular customers who I tried talking into using FBV over ROH before I left the country are still using it. Now since I fly back to the UK at the end of the month and will be seeing ice 3 times a week this coming year, I'm kinda worried about not being able to get my 90/75 anywhere due to availability... Anybody have any idea of where FBV might be done in England? :S

Yeah, that makes sense, JR. I guess our store looks at sharpening as more of a labour-based charge, and for the most part I agree. Like I said, FBV doesn't require me doing any extra work aside from dressing the wheel. We've got more and more customers coming in asking for it now though, so maybe head office will catch on and bump up the price of FBV. Maybe they were waiting to see if the technology was a wash before they tagged a couple more bucks to it.

+1, definitely. At the same time though, I don't ever mind if a customer has any questions. I feel like if I can't speak confidently about what I'm doing or how I'm doing it, I shouldn't be doing it at all.

I understand why shops charge more for "premium" sharpenings, but IMO it's stupid. I give each and every one of my customers the same level of quality, regardless of whether or not its a FBV, ROH, Goalie, etc. It's not like any more effort is required on my behalf to do a FBV than a ROH. I suppose that's probably a perk of working in a corporately owned store rather than a mom n' pop LHS. Like I said, I don't need any more or less time to do a FBV than a ROH. You're obviously gonna lose more steel if he take more passes, and if I were you I'd try to watch his technique while he's sharpening. Don't bother telling him he's a slow sharpener, though. What I'd do is ask him why it takes longer to do a FBV. If his service is solid, he shouldn't have any issues explaining.

I can see where you're coming from with the FBV feeling dull just as quickly as a regular ROH. That's something I was thinking too at first, but decided to keep playing beyond where I'd normally get my skate sharpened, and they still felt fine. Your edges on your 90/75 are less pronounced than they would be on a ROH. Maybe you're just getting used to the glide, or maybe you're just getting better at skating. Give the 100/50 a shot and see how the bite is. Regarding your sharpener taking 20 minutes to do a pair... I take about the same amount of time to sharpen my skates at a FBV than I do a ROH, which is around 5-6 minutes a pair. And I haven't screwed up a single FBV cut for my customers. Not sure why it takes your guy so long. I hope it's just because he's meticulous.

Just my $.02 update on how the FBV is doing for me... I simply CANNOT go back to regular sharpenings. I tried doing a quick switch back to my old "9/16 ROH last week and it felt like I was skating on what use to feel like a "3/8. I couldn't glide as far, I wasn't as fast on my feet and I wasn't able to lean nearly as hard into turns. I got the girlfriend to take a few ice-level snapshots at my last game, and there's a picture of me in a hard turn and my head was lower than the top of the boards. FBV holds and edge like a dream, especially paired with the Step runners that I've recently put on my One95s. I work in a LHS pro shop so I have the luxury of experimenting with my steel whenever I want, but it doesn't look like I'll have to be doing any of that for a while. I've been averaging 4 or 5 games/practices/shinnies before I run them through again, as opposed to sharpening them every other skate like I did with the "9/16. Nothing short of incredible.
