Pats Trade for Corey Dillon

Recommended Posts

Not a huge surprise he was traded. They asked for the same thing from the Broncos and the Raiders. I'm a little surprised the Pats got him though. Not because they don't need a RB (because they do), but because they still have two first rounders and I thought it was almost a lock for them to get either Kevin Jones or Stephen Jackson. Not sure what they could be looking at now. LB or CB? They did lose Damien Woody, so maybe they'll pick up Jack Grove?

I don't know if I'd say that. They already lost one of the best centers in the league and a great run stuffing defensive tackle. If Law doesn't play, they'll be hurting a little bit.

Wow. This does add soooo much to the Pats. They never had a solid running game or a solid runner, Brady was just able to use lots of short patterns to move down the field. Netting Dillon adds a whole new dimension to their team. Now they can open up that passing game even more by giving Dillon the ball.

I also think this is a great fit for Dillon. He will get to show how good he is at RB, and he is quite good at what he does.

Dillon is a "me" type of player coming to an "us" type of team. I'm sure he'll do well this year, but I don't know how much better it makes the Pats.

I do completely agree with Dillon being a "me" player, but I think the added dimension of having a great running game will benefit the Pats.

Unless they're content with the smurf WRs they have they could get bigger/better there. I'm thinking they need to shore up their lines though, but a WR would be tempting.

And as for Dillon being more of a 'me' player I see the traits of that but I also see the guy who took less money to stay in a complete dump of a city/franchise.

That's what was so strange about his situation. He said he'd never play for Cinci again and that he couldn't wait to get out of town. Then he goes around and signs a long term deal when he could've become a free agent. A year goes by and now he's the 2nd RB on a good, young team. Now he wants out again.

He's a headcase and doesn't fit the Patriots system at all. He's a kind of guy that can take some carries for losses because he's willing to wait until he breaks a big run. The Pats are a ball control type of team who use their RBs in pass patterns. Now you can say that Antwain Smith wasn't a pass catcher either, but he also didn't get the amount of touches that you expect your high priced, feature back to get.

I definitely agree with that. I also agree that New Englands WRs are attrocious, but they don't need the star players. Like LegoDoom pointed out the Pats are definitely a ball control team. All they need is a guy that can go over the middle or curl out and catch a ball. The Moss's and Owen's of the league are good because they stretch the field and are able to jump over guys and to make the catch. The Pats don't need that. While I could understand them picking someone like that up I think that going for a RB was best. To bad they didn't pick someone really good at catching the ball and turning it into yards like S. Alexander.

Wow, Cleveland is so dumb. This is a horrible trade for them. They gave up a pro bowl back for a 2nd round pick. The Pats are absoutely stacked and will be a heavy favorite for next years Super Bowl too. They could have got much more than a 2nd rounder.

While Cleveland may be dumb, Cincinnati is the culprit this time ;)

And there's no way they could've gotten more than a 2nd rounder for Dillon. He said he wasn't going to play and has a high contract. Similar situation as TO had (as far as disgruntled and demanding a trade). I like that there are more player trades in the NFL this year, but teams aren't getting any kind of value for good players.

Also just to note the trade was for a second round pick in this years draft, not the 2005 draft as stated in the original post.

He restructured his contract as part of the deal. I heard that it's only going to be about 1.5 mil this year plus incentives. Based on the current deal, they can cut him at any time without any cap impact. (In case he's as much of a pain as he was in Cinn). The only thing the Pats would lose is the draft pick if he proves to be a problem. Not to mention that it's actually last year's 3rd round pick (The Pats gave the Dolphins their 3rd round pick last year for a 2nd round pick this year)

I think this was a great move! Belichick & Pioli are geniuses! :D

While it may seem like a good deal for the Pats, just remember that a lot of other teams weren't willing to give up that much. And I find it hard to believe that some cash didn't go the Bengals way. After all, they had to take a cap hit for whatever signing bonus Dillon had. It's going to be a really bad trade for Cinci if they can't sign Rudi Johnson to a long term deal and have to waste a high pick on a RB.

Yeah if they don't sign Rudi, who I thought looked spectacular last season, they are going to be in a world of hurt.

All this football talk is really making me more and more excited for the football season. Only 4 months to go :D
