Helmet Choices

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a new helmet, and I am looking for feedback on the RBK 8k, and the Bauer 8000. I have deicded to go top of the line for my next helmet, after trying on an Bauer 8000 at my LHS, and I was amazed at how light it was. I was also looking at the RBK 8k online, since only one LHS around here carries RBK, I haven't tried it on yet. So besides looking for feedback, I also have a few questions. (1) If I do get the 8k, I need to put a full cage on it. Would an Oakley cage fit? (2) If the Oakley dosen't, will and Itech fit? (3) Since I haven't tried on an 8k yet, Is it just as light an the Bauer 8000? Thanks.

Edit: 800 posts!

i loved the 8000 but i had it for about a month and then a part on the inside cracked so i decided to trade it in for a 5000. i tried on the 8k and i didnt like the gel packs ,they were kinda sticky(not jam sticky but like rubber sticky) and it pulled my hair and it just wasnt nice

so for comfort i say go for the 8000 and since my 8000 cracked im guessing you should go for the 8k for protection

I have friends who have the 8k and the 8000 helmets. The 8K is less bulky than the 8000 and the 8k is more profiled. I liked the fit of the 8k more than the 8000, as it sat closer to my head. As for cages/visors, both my friends who have the 8k were able to fit an oakley half-visor on them. Hope this helps.

i just got the 8k and love it. it is very light, has good protection and is comfortable. i had a 5000 before and i like the 8k better. i put a jofa 480 full cage on it and it fits perfect and looks good too.

there is hardly any padding on the 8k and the hard styrofoam started hurting my head when i got checked so i added some bauer 5000 pads to the rbk where there is no padding, and it is so comfortable, its is alot nicer then the 8000,the 8000 is great but it is way to boxy and the fit wasnt for me

I have the 8K and I find it's really comfortable and really light. I was in the same boat as you, had a CCM 652 for a while and wanted to go high end and chose the 8K. I put a Itech concept II visor/cage and it's still pretty light. You also gotta love that it's fully adjustable all the way around the dome so you get a nice fit all the way around.

i tried both on, and i would say that the rbk just didn't fit my head. it was also a lot "shallower" feeling than the 8000, and was lighter. the 8000 was more comfortable and was more adjustable though it was slightly heavier/boxier. it was also cheaper by $50 :P

i've had the 8000 for about a month of play, and it's been fantastic, so if the 8000 fits you, get it.

i liked my 8000 for the first couple months but then the forehead gelpad got really hard and it feels like a rock on my head now. 8k will be my next bucket. That thing is REALLY light and comfy.

i wear the 8k and i love its comfort n protection, some guys at my work dun like it cause of the holes on the top saying it reduces protection but the shell of the helmet doesnt do a whole lot, its more the padding on the inside that does the protection. so im pretty upset when he says its not great

I tried both on at my LHS....The Rbk fits TOTALLY different...the helmet looked like a swimming pool on my head and felt like it was floating on the top of my head (that was a Large).....the 8000 fit the best on me and obviously I have a FAT head because I needed a XL (Im 15 by the way lol) Id make sure you try them both on before buying

For anyone who has used the 8K has the padding gone hard? Would it be possible for this to happen with the 8K or is this only a problem that would occur with the Bauer 5000 and 8000 gel packs?

(Sorry to bring back an old topic)

Just though I'd share. If anyone cares I ended up getting the RBK 8k (took me long enough eh?) Can't wait to get out of my old CCM 652, and into my new bucket.

Just wanted to throw this out there. There are no gel pacs in the 8000 helmet. What you feel is a softer foam that does feel like a gel pack. When people say that the "gel" becomes hard it is actually the foam that has been compressed down due to it constantly forming to your head.

Would an Oakley cage fit?

Yes it does, I have done it to my 8000 and it works wonderfully. Also if you do put the oakley on, it is best to use the oakley chin cup because it is a lot more comfortable.
