Im having trouble aiming my wrist shots

Recommended Posts

Hi i'm new. During the last few weeks I have been doing alot of off-ice shooting in my basement. I noticed that when I put max power into my wrist shots I have a hard time keeping them on net (they either fly over the net or nail the cross bar) I am keeping my follow through so it is straight at the net but it still sails way too high. I have to weaken my shots a bit to keep them on net, which is not something I want to do. Can anyone offer any tips on what I may be doing wrong? Is it maybe my curve? (using the SherWood PMP 7000 Leclair pattern, which is a slight mid curve with an open face)

Your tips are greatly appreciated :)

Well your curve sounds similar to a drury or sakic (not familiar with Leclair). One solution is to get a curve that is less open such as a modano or iginla(pattern DB can help you with this). Another solution is to just keep your follow through lower. Hope i was some help.

despite what the pattern db says..i find my Leclairs to be a lot like a Modano and with a 4.5 lie had a bit of trouble switching back from a Sakic...

i think the biggest thing is figuring out where you are releasing your shot...when you are shooting what you think is "85"% instead of max..also..always be aware of overgripping etc when shooting..smoothness over strength...

I find I carry my follow through a little higher when I put max effort into my shots. My technique always suffers when I put everything into my shots.

The higher the follow through, the higher the shot was what I've been taught. You will always want the toe of your stick pointing at the net, though.

The curve makes a difference but I have no expierience regarding Leclair pattern however I used a Sakic and picked corners with my wristers and switched to a Modano and now my wristers arnt as fast but they are relatively accurate so it all depeneds on where you release from.

I find follow-thurs make no difference for my wristers, I find that if you "over grip" the shaft as in spread your hands to far down the shaft like a slap shot the shot goes a lot higher as opposed to keeping your hands closing near the top portion of the shaft. One more thing that might help accuracy is keeping your blade face down and facing the floor after your follow-thru it helped my accuracy.

I use a Sakic and how I control my shots is hard to explain, but when I want it on the ice I put the angle of the blade at like a 90 degree angle and then follow through, and when I want to roof it its more like tilted back. Just go the rink some time when they have open ice and practice this on an open net.

try thinking about your follow through when you shoot. Your weight exchange will also help, but make sure that you keep your blade down on the follow through and not facing up.

one solution move closer to the net ;) shots that are going over farther away will tuck in under the pipe closer. I know a ton of people who would kill to have this problem since they can't get their wristers off the ice. I would say watch your follow through and like others have said aim the tip of the blade where you want the puck to go, its more difficult when you're really cranking but try it slower and work to add speed as you get more comfortable. Have you tried shooting on ice since you started this off ice practice and is it the same? It could be the surface?

Like golf here, in golf if you open your club face the ball will go straight up. So try closing your blade a little bit. May help may not. But you do need practice.

Alright guys thanks for the tips. I guess I just need practice and I'll try moving closer to the net as well (I have been shooting about 20-25 feet away)

Yea try moving closer, because the further you are away the more time it has to rise.

I'm using standard pucks.

I just started playing hockey again a year ago (I'm 16 but i played for awhile about 5 years ago) My skating is horrible so my only real asset has to be my shooting ability, which is .. better than alot of players I play with (house league) I've been told that I play alot like Pierre Dagenais.
