laptops

Recommended Posts

i'm in the market for a laptop computer for university next year, and have been browsing the internet for one, and came across dell.ca. they seem to have good deals on laptops, and at reasonable prices. my question is, has anyone ordered stuff from their site, and how are the dell computers in general. i know it'll vary from model to model, but on a general basis.

Dell quality has been slipping in recent years but they aren't too bad. I never had a lot of problems with teh ones I used but some of the people in the company I used to work for used the cheaper ones as desktops and they burned up the motehrboard.

I would suggest getting the highest level warranty you can afford.

I have the Dell Inspiron 1150 and hate it. My brother has the same computer, and his has less problems than mine, but still isn't perfect by any means. I don't know computer language, but mine had a problem with what I'd call the "internet jack"...the area where you plug an ethernet cord into it. For some reason, my computer didn't think it was capable of using the internet. I got it fixed while it was still under warrantee, but that is such a hassle! I ordered mine from Dell's US website by the way. Definately get the best warrantee available.

Never had any problems with Dell computers (about 7 or 8 of them in my lifetime). Id say you get the best value in any Dell, at school when i lived in australia we had to buy other brands (toshiba, NEC) under school policy for like $2000 and they were all terrible, but they were expensive :P

i'm looking to spend no more then $1200 cdn before tax, so probably around the $1400-1500 level. my mom was telling me today that a friend of hers that just finished at acadia university used a dell one, since that's what they were given, and she said it crashed constantly. so that kinda dampened my spirits on ordering one from dell. is there any other companys out there that offer great laptops. keep in mind, i'm from canada, so i'd rather not have to deal with the states with shipping and across border fees and all that junk.

Computers are finicky little things, notebooks even more so. From my experience most of the more well known brands are all fairly similiar in quality, it's the service that varies. I generally shop for price and specs with little regards to brand. Although I wouldn't buy a Dell right now just because they're ugly as hell and they don't make a tablet. Which leads me to...

If this is for school might I suggest a tablet PC? Toshiba makes an AWESOME tablet PC and my GF uses one. It's an amazing little thing. She's able to take notes and stuff for classes right on the screen and then convert them to text or print them as is. Like a giant PDA running windows XP but with all the regular functions of a typical notebook PC in a wonderfully compact size and weight. The 14" version is probably only $100-$200 over your price range but it's money well spent IMO.

Personally i love dell. I think it makes a great computer and IMO i would say that the vaio's are crap. I have used dell's for a while now, both there laptops and desktops and havent had any freak problems.

Unless it was crashing due to hardware failures, it wasn't crashing because it was a Dell. Software crashes are due to user error more than anything.

I'd stay away from the Sony Viao. The CD drive easily breaks, and since it is integrated to the motherboard, you MUST replace the entire motherboard to fix the problem. If it occurs after the warranty period, you essentially have to replace the whole computer. A few of my friends had this happen to them.

We use a Gateway M460S for tuning, and it's a great notebook. You can get 6-ish hours out of one charge on it, which is nice if you're taking it to school.

Good thing I got the extended warranty then.

Does your school bookstore sell computers? Most schools have pretty good student discounts.

the school discount is nothing special. you rent out the laptop for $100 a month, for 7 months, and then have the option to buy it for $1200cdn, no taxes. that equates to $1900 for a laptop which you can buy at a store for roughly $1200, give or take

well this is only the deal the school offers. i don't know if there is any special discount for students if you went in to purchase a laptop from the campus store. i think it may be 5% if anything. that number seems to shout out at me, but it may just be for the bookstore

Make sure you wait until you can find one for a good deal, especially from dell. They have random deals running a lot, I almost bought one even though I dont need one a few days ago with a "Save $750 off select Inspirons over $1499" coupon. Its over now, but if you're patient you could probably find a different one.

I wouldnt put so much emphasis on brand, all of these computers crashing or most likely from the user not the brand. If you're that afraid of it crashing a lot maybe you could get an Apple, they have nice notebooks.

If you've got the money, go IBM. If you don't have the money, the Toshiba M45 is a great 15.4 inch laptop and the M55 is a great 14 inch laptop. Also, they have some sick 3 day turnaround time on their own warrantee, it's great.

Toshibas worked well for me in several different environments. Major problems were very rare and service was excellent.
