Help me pick a cage.

Recommended Posts

I've decided to switch from a half visor to a full cage. I've narrowed it down to 2 choices: Jofa 480 (Chrome) or Itech 908i2 RBEVIII (Black/white).

They both look similar in bar structure. I guess the biggest factor is whether to go with chrome or the black/white combo. Please advise.

Thanks.

Lol, those were the two cages I was going to suggest. They both have good vision and look good so just pick one I guess. I use the Itech I2 and I like it but I cant really notice

the difference with the white inside.

I use the Jofa 480 in chrome currently.. I can't say much about comparrisons to the Itech I2 but I used a black Itech RBE III before and the 480 seemed to be a little lighter and I felt the Jofa is much better in terms of vision.. I found cages pretty balanced when you put them on your helmet though so I don't notice the weight.

The RBEIII has horrible grid spacing I found.. for my face I found that there was a cross in front of my eyes almost like a crosshair in my vision.. but the Jofa no complaints.. I doubt that's an issue between the I2 and the Jofa..

If its color you're worried about, my cousin spray painted his 1/2 visor cage silver (it was black originally) said it did help.. going from a black RBEIII to the chrome Jofa seemed to help too but it might be the grid.. I also hear people complain about the chrome being bad because of glare which I don't notice it but you might want to go with the I2 because of that.

Why not have a look at JOFA's FM 998 "View No 1" combo. That way you get the visibility of the visor and the lower face protection a cage offers.

Cheers

Go to the store and try both of them on and then get the one that you like best rather than buy something sight-unseen or because *insert name here* says it's the best.

I like the concept of the I2 because there is some merit to the design with the black outside/white inside paint.

Although both cages are quite good, in this case I would give the edge to Itech's I2. I've noticed an improvement in vision with the black/white concept and it makes sense.

I've also heard rumors that Curtis Joseph (amongst other goalies who wear chrome) sand-paper the chrome off the inside of his cage. But then again, some people state they have no problems with the chrome.

I think you'll be happy with either cage, but I think the I2 has performance advantages.

I realize this wasn't one of the choices you listed, but why wouldn't you go with a Bauer True Vision? The titanium colouring has none of the detriments associated with any of the other colours. (white - ice blend / black - puck blend / chrome - reflection)

Its the cage I use when I play out and allows the best vision IMO. BTW, my second choice would be chrome. It's what I use in net and the lesser of all evils available for goalie cages. Again, just my 2 cents....

Grey cages where made because they are obviously much cheaper to manufacture then a two coloured (white/black) cage, not because they are better.

Bauer new that black is too difficult to see through and that white cages are the best for vision but simply don't sell. So they went half-way in between and made a Grey cage. The Grey cage is neither the best for vision nor the best to absorb glare. Why would you go half-way when you can get the real thing in an I2?

I've tried both and found that the titanium coloring of the Bauer works far better than the I2 which is nothing more than a gimmick.

Of course, it all comes down to PP.

But I'd take the Bauer over any other anyday.

Hey, whatever works for you better is cool, but to say that the I2 is a gimmick is a little ridiculous. Its interesting to note that not one goalie in the NHL wears a "Grey" cage. They wear the I2, white, chrome, black, red, gold but NO GREY - I wonder why???

Anyways, I don't want to get into a pissing competition with you. Yes grey cages are good but the consenses seems to be that grey cages come a close third to the jofa chrome and itech I2 cages.

maybe because it doesn't match their jersey :P okay so that's not true.

i didn't want to start a new thread so does anyone know if you can get the chin cup from the bauer 8000 cages just by itself? i already have a true vision that i'm happy with, but i don't like it when the chin cup gets soggy from sweat so and i don't want to drop $50 on a but ugly cage just for the chin cup

I had the 8000 cage, it gets soaked with sweat and water to and takes long to dry. But it felt good on my chin.
