New skates and stick.... 8090's or XXX

Recommended Posts

hey, i havent been on a site like this for a long time, )not since the old days of corebeam.net if anyone here can remember that) but i need some new equiptment this year, and since none of this stuff is cheap i figured i would ask people that know what they are talking about, about some of the equiptment i am interested in.

First, i need skates, i have worn Vapor XX's for 2 years now and its time for a change, i really liked these skates and would like to stick with bauer or nike, ( I really like their stuff and service) so what are the differences and advantages between the XXX's and the supreme 8090's? or if there are any other skates that you would recomend

second, helmet, ive been a big fan of the bauer 5000 since they have come out, now should i get another one or is it worth buying the ugly 8000? is there that much difference?

third, stick, i have a response plus and the blade is done, the stick didnt last very long and i was kinda dissapointed with it, so i was thinking of something along the lines of the XN10 or a Inno novious or 1100, possibly A vapor XX or XXX. but since i usually only destroy blades, should i go back to using a shaft/blade combo?

thanks alot for the help

Tanner

first of all, the 8090's are a wide deep fitting boot. the vapor line is pretty much narrow and not deep, so you're looking at completely different fit. if you fit well in XX's, get XXX's if you want, but you'd be a bad fit in 8090s.

the 8000 helmet is pretty much the same as the 5000 helmet, except the foam pack padding is lower profile and it's "anti microbial". it's also somewhat more adjustable, but if the 5000 helmet is comfortable on your head, there is no point spending extra for the 8000.

since you usually destroy blades, go back to a shaft/blade combo, unless you enjoy spending $250 for a blade

asdfa said id go with a shaft/balde combo if i were you. id say R2XN10(havnt used one personally but have heard good things) and matched with a nice wood blade(cheaper since you go through alot) or maybe a synthesis, i really liked mine.

Tapered combo is the way to go.

Some people, including me, find that Inno shafts can torque on them when shooting. Others have no problem at all.

ok, so im gona stick with the 5000 for a helmet but im still stuck bettween skates, what about those new nikes, the flex fit 12's? how are they?

for stick im stuck between the r2xn10 and the redlite xn10, does a taperd shaft make alot of difference and which shaft is more durable

Should be similar durability. For the shaft, I like tapereds, but blade availability is #1 in my eyes.

Try the skates on, that'll be how you decide on them.

okay, do you not understand that the two skates you are choosing in between fit totally different feet? it's like you're deciding what sort of apple would be best for an apple pie and have narrowed your choices down to the granny smith and a florida orange  .

anyways, if you live in canada, my LHS has XXX's for $700 and 8090's for $500.

tapered shafts feel more like OPS's in terms of the kickpoint. with standard shafts, it feels more like the entire shaft is flexing but tapered shafts feel like they have a lower flex point.

well ive never tried a pair of the 8090's on so maybe they will fit better, and for $200 less even if they dont quite fit as good y not? also by the time i bake them in im sure they will fit fine.

but thanks alot guys for all the quick replys

Baking skates is not going to make them fit different.

Baking a skate will not make it narrower or shallower, nor will it change the arch, toe box, or make any other major modification. You'll have to try both pairs on, if you're able to, to make the best decision. If price is a factor, look for another pair of XXs or look at the XIXs (19s). If you don't have access to a LHS to try the skates, and price is not a factor, go for the XXXs... but beware, some of the guys on here have said they've gone down 1/2 size and gone wider (EE) in the XXXs than they wore in the XXs. Ask around on that if you need to...
