Wake Up Detroit!

Recommended Posts

It's pretty tough. I heard Dats wants upwards of 5 mill and Zetterberg wants 2.5. Not good when they need to sign 4 more players to fill their roster.

Signing them should be their first priority. If they have to slightly overpay them and shed salary elsewhere, so be it. It'd be the mistake of the century to lose them for nothing.

being a detroiter, i agree that they need to sign these two guys... but, if you slightly overpay them and shed elsewhere, the you are completely defeating the purpose of the work stoppage and the new agreement. that is the point of the entire lockout... no more overpaying... i don't care who the player is!! they are grown men playing a GAME. first, these two guys should be happy that they are in the country playing in the league, and second, whatever happened to guys that care about a team, and want to play for that team, even if it means a lil less money... lets be honest, they make enough even as fourth liners. i don't care what player you are, and in what sport, nobody is worth millions unless they are saving lives!

If your going to be a dick about how much money they make, then go watch soccer or basketball, if you think of the most popular sports, their top leagues, then hockey players probably make the least of anyone.

not trying to be a dick, simply honest. and with your comments about watching other sports... i think all of the pro sports overpay their athletes, and i think the sports cost too much to go watch. im not picking on hockey players here. but i think you guys missed the point of my comment. the owners are not going to simply give these guys the money they want, because then we are back in the same situation as before the cba. theo... not claiming the players to be evil... just saying lets all be men about this, and get this game back to what it should be... fun and enjoyable to the players and fans. not trying to offend anyone, just speaking my mind.

Prenny,

I understand what you are saying, but, look at some of the contracts that have been thrown out here so far. The owners are back to doing the same thing they did before.

These two guys that are being talked about in this thread happen to be from your town. The fans want them signed, the team is saying "no, they are asking to much." Joe fan doesn't care about that. He wants to see his team fight for the prize. I'm sure you can see where this is going.

oh ya, like i said, i was just speaking my mind. theo, you are exactly right, lets reward the people that put their lives on the line first! im actually proud of detroits head office for not giving into these guys demands for higher contracts. but oh well. i guess what it all boils down to is that this game becomes affordable for the real fans.

side not story: a buddy of mine was at a playoff game when the league was going...haha... anyways, he was sitting at the game by himself, just enjoying watching the wings in the playoffs. the couple sitting next to him were chatting away, up and down for drinks and crap. he's still sitting there, and the lady says to him, "whats wrong?" nothing why... she says, you're here by yourself, and you've just sat here staring at the game the whole time, aren't you having any fun? he says "lady, you haven't watched a second of this game, why are you here?" "if you want to drink, eat, and talk, why don't you go to a bar and let the fans watch the game"

i guess its the sad state that our wonderful game has become. i remember hearing stories from the old fans about games at Olympia. if you came to your seat after the play started for the period, you were heckled and picked on the rest of the night.

all business and no pleasure these days. oh well!

this might not be as bad as it sounds guys.. i was thinking about this for a bit and i think it's safe to say that detroit will make the playoffs for sure. Datsyuk can leave his russian team in mid season if he wanted so even if detriot gave him a 5.5 mill year contract for this season. they'll only have to pay him half that when he joins the team and at a time they need him most (2nd half of the season and playoffs). Also with the money they'll save next year when yzerman retires can be put into the datsyuk contract and still be under the cap.

I can see Detroit faltering without Datsyuk. He has to sign before Dec.1, so its not a huge savings and theres new rumours that his out clause is either very early, or non-existant.

Gotta love how Datsyuk said he wanted Heatley money. Detroit offeres Datsyuk 5, he refuses. Heatley makes 3.5 this year. I'd love to see Detroit offer him 3.5 as "heatley money" as a way to tell him to not be greedy. He isn't even in heatleys league.

I disagree i think he is in Heatleys league but i don't think he deserves more then 5mill.

Heatleys looked pretty ordinary since coming back from the crash, he had good numbers, but didn't look like the same player. Since then he's had a serious eye injury and been a big dissappointment in 2 international tournaments (possibly the ESL too).

In this market? Unless you are a point a game player, you don't deserve 5M.

i dont know if i should add my comment to this  i dont think datsyuk deserves more than 3.5 mill. hes a great player and i love watching him but i agree with prenny207 they shouldnt fight over how much they get paid. they should be happy that they can just play hockey while everyone else works and plays hockey for fun and not money. Im glad the owners didnt just give him the money he wanted. on a better note, at least detroit has zetterberg. they're really going to need him especailly without datsyuk.
