Sassmasta 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2005 Ok Guys, I just need your opinion/suggestions on this one. I play as a foward in roller hockey....I have a half decent shot, but I want a better one. I spoke to one of the guys that plays on my team and on several different tournament/'pro' roller hockey teams. He has probably the nastiest shot I have ever seen...pinpoint accuracy and extremely hard. I asked him what should I do to get a more powerful accurate shot. he said take a piece of plywood to an outdoor rink, buy about 20 ice hockey pucks and shoot 100 wrist shots and 100 snap shots off of the piece of plywood at least 4 times a week. He said after two weeks I will notice a HUGE difference. He attributes that to the reason he has such a good shot. Does anyone have any variations/suggestions for me? Will the plywood chew the blade of my OPS? Should I buy that plastic material and screw it onto the plywood?
awall 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2005 I too have heard of people doing this, but kinda wondered if it would chew up a stick. If I do try it i'll probably use my two piece stick just in case. I don't want to damage my stealth unnecissarily.adam
hockechamp14 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2005 Oh yeah, a couple times playing pick up roller with my friends who don't play ice, and they were wowed by how hard I shot the puck. Also, if you increase your grip stregnth, it will do a lot for your shot too.
Sassmasta 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2005 I went out today and shot 200 pucks.....instead of using plywood I used a 3/4" thick piece of pine wood that was finished and polished. No wear on the stick whatsoever. My forearms are burning like hell though...
hockechamp14 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2005 Oh wow, that would be like ice players shooting a bunch of those double weight red pucks right?
hunter4oz 0 Report post Posted September 13, 2005 basically i like shooting those at the goalies and having it actually go into their glove and then into the net because its soo heavy lol

kovalchuk71 212 Report post Posted September 13, 2005 Would forearm rolls (the weight on a stick rod) do the same thing as shooting pucks that are heavier?
All Torhs Team 0 Report post Posted September 13, 2005 Yes this will help your game. It is a fact that Bobby Hull was Forced by his dad to shoot 200 pucks A DAY !!! I think it mighta helped.... :P I dont shoot from standing still. I go to the rink 5 times a week and shoot going full speed or sorta coasting....on my skates. Just like a game....dont help unless its the same as whats gonna be goiin down in a game. ALSO...please tell me that you all know to wear your gloves...if your not...you should...because you must in a game. I dont think that you have to shoot Everyday like Bobby Hull..but like at least 4 times a week. also...I've seen plywood mess up some peoples blades. I have tried that sinthetic ice pad. it comes in several sizes and its about 100-150 dallars...DEFFIDENTLY worth it. Dont have one yet but have tested them out alot. If your not gonna get one of those...id try getting a ten dallar outdoor stick....Just thought id share.... hey agian kovalchuk. B)
Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted September 13, 2005 I think the plywould would make shooting harder, this is why it was suggested over synthetic ice or smooth concrete.

B) I agree with you mostly on everything except for the ten dollar stick....if you are trying to simulate a game situation wouldnt you want to use the sticks that you use in games? Just a thought.p.s. I use a board of pine wood that is sanded and finished so that the puck glides decently well...(still not like synthetic ice, but close)

Jay Leno made a joke out of it and brought out a washing machine for him to shoot into when he came on the tonight show a little while back.
biff44 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 I don't know the best shooting surface, but I know the best thing to shoot at. Get an old rug, maybe 8' x 10'. Nail the 10' side to a 2x4, and hang the 2x4 from the ceiling, with the bottom edge of the rug just touching the floor. Put the whole contraption 3 inches or so from the back wall. Now you can shoot all day and not punch holes in the wall, and the sound of the puck hitting is reduced by a lot.

I thought he had a net in his basement that he shot at and the washing machine was just off to the side and must of got hit a lot. He used to shoot into the family washing machine.. On that note, myself and a friend back in bantam used to shoot pucks at his moms old dryer set up in the driveway, same concept pretty much, good 5 hole practice..
