NHL's New Marketing Campaign

Hi folks.

The NHL is about to go to market to win back all the lost, and maybe even get some new fans.

NHL.com moves their content around all the time but right now it's front and centre on their homepage.

Pretty cheezy if you ask me -- I think they'd be better with higlight reel type of stuff.

What do you think?

EDIT: Okay, now I've watched all the videos, including the press conference. I still think it's cheezy, but at least I know there will be a lot more to it than the "teaser" spot.

Mind you I haven't seen all of it (just the bit that TSN showed). But if this is meant to market the NHL....where is the NHL is the video. There is a "hockey player" wearing an NHL jersey...and you see brief flashes of actual hokcvey....but shouldn't the leagues marquee players, and new super stars (ie: CROSBY) be in this thing. Especially with all the players that have changed teams...they could have footage of stars in new places.

Bettman is a former NBA guy. They've built their marketing around 2-3 guys (LeBron, Shaq, Nash, etc...). That's what the NHL should be doing, Make ALL the marketing about the marquee guys.

*shrug...sigh!*

And besides that everyone know that hot hockey wifes are blonde?!?!?!?!?

The NHL must have spent all of its budget on outside counsel for the lockout... that's just horrible.

the first of which depicts a hockey player preparing for a game with the backdrop of a mythical temple, like a Sumarai warrior getting ready for battle.

That's hilarious, I used to pretend I was suiting up for battle when getting dressed for hockey....when I was 6.

Ouch. Just painful to watch. No one is going to buy a ticket to a game or watch a game on TV to see the heroic battle taking place on the ice. They watch because they want to see their favorite stars and their favorite teams. Sell the stars of the game, not a mythical idea.

I saw a bit last night on TSN of the clip and haven't been able to get the TSN one to work, but I thought I saw Roy in net for one of the black and white clips. That's not good for anybody.

Start a petition to ban those ads from airing before the sport looses more fans before they ever gained them back...after watching it one last time, I'm still not sure if its an ad for Desperate Housewives or a new Jackie Chan movie...

Maybe they helped with the production costs as Bettman thanked his "partners" in the speech leading up to the presentation of the ads. You can definitely see the RBK, CCM & Jofa product placement.

As we know they're all part of the same entity, which also includes Koho.

NHL spokeswoman Bernadette Mansur said she was surprised to Burk's reactions to the ad.

''This ad shows no disrespect for women,'' Mansur said. ''On the contrary, the woman is the spiritual and physical trainer for the `Warrior' and is his mentor.''

Sit a year out and then market hockey with candles and the WARRIOR!!!! WOOOOOOOO..no.

I got so embaressed for the NHL when i saw the ad on tv i had to change the channel. I'm not joking. I can't believe somebody got paid to make this ad, then somebody who works for the NHL watched it was like "ya that was awesome, people will love it, lets put it on tv".

It may be the worst ad campaign I've seen for a professional sports league. I would be embarrassed if I had been associated with it.

I've sent the NHL my opinion of the new campaign, along with a link to this thread. I'm sure we'll see the changes soon. :P
