Overdrive blades

FYI:

At my ref clinic (USA Hockey) yesterday all of the refs were specifically told that ODBs are not legal. In fact the wording was changed in the rule book to make sure they were outlawed.

Geez..... Everywhere i go there's a stupid law  on those "non-performace enchancers" they just allow you to play better and even the level of the playing field. I just don't understand this they help you not get hurt and helps your "ups and downs" I looked at the website (Overdrive Blades) And i agree with the inventor of those skates for that they're not helping you cheat, they're helping you play to ur best! That's my 2 cents

I've seen guys use them and it increases their mobility in the butterfly. It's also not the safest piece of equipment, as some guys file an edge onto them for more grip.

I think if they had them they would make my game way better when down in the butterfly but I aint paying that much first of all for them and they aren't even necesarry, and why do people whine so much, its a rule so follow it. stop trying to defend them, they put a rule in place so live with it and try harder, youll be better in the end for it.

ODB? Yeah man he was in jail a LOT...

Being a proud, long time, ODB user, I have to say these things are worth their weight in gold when it comes to preventing groin injury from having your skate slide out from hitting the cowling when holding a low stance or pushing off laterally...

That having been said, I don't believe they are the do all, end all, performance enhancing piece of equipment that some people seem to be claiming they are.

Do they prevent injury, DEFINITELY. Do they assist in pushing off laterally...yes. While in the butterfly...not so much. The angle of your skate within the confine of the pad makes it virtually impossible for the blades to allow you to push off of them while in a butterfly position. Do they make you SUPER GOALIE...no. I don't really believe they are a performance enhancement as much as they are a piece of safety gear. No different than your pads, gloves, chest and arm or cup...and you wouldn't want to play without those rules or not!

JR can vouch for me here. They definitely don't make you super goalie.

Everyone I know who uses them, uses them as a crutch to get up or to shuffle while down. They don't have to lift up nearly as far to dig in the ODB as they would to get their steel on the ice. You are the first peron I've ever heard say they prevent injuries.

I do agree that no piece of gear will make you a super goalie. In fact, most of the guys I know who use them still give up plenty of goals.

Ive played in net for roughly 10 years now without overdrive blades and never once has my skate slipped out on me causing an injury that would have been prevented had I been wearing the ODBs. Everyone I talk to uses them as a tool to push off while in the butterfly and slide across the net and to get an inside edge faster when getting up from the butterfly. Thats not protection, thats performance enhancement. And why wouldnt that guy feed a bunch of bs on his overdrive site...those things probably cost a buck to make and hes making a ton of profit off the sales, of course hed want them legalized and feed a bunch of crap about protection to try and legalize them.

I have two pairs of goalie skates. One with OD blades and one without. They really don't make me any better. They make things easier...but without them i'm still able to do the same stuff but it just takes a little bit more effort.

oh lol! :D that's funny and for those goalie who file an edge are not supposed to do that that makes the skates worse if they need new grip buy new ones i'm still not finished reading the whole website so i didn't get to the ordering part yet but i'm not going to buy them cuz i'll lose more money if they say for my hs hockey leauge that i can't use them and i'll have to pay for new skates oh well... maybe next time but still i don't understand y the NHL thinks they're cheaters they help u from getting hurt.

I play with some goalies who also say they prevent groin injuries, the ones that happen when they suddenly lose blade contact with the ice and start sliding out.

I agree completely. I tore a MCL in my knee a few years back, had I had OD on that never would have happened. I've been using them for 6 months. I havent noticed any Performance enhancement (i.e, massive GAA dropage) other than amore confident grip.

I don't see why if a goalie uses something it's called a performance enhancement, but if a player gets a new piece of eqipment, it's considered a technology breakthru and accepted with open arms. Unlike the NHL, most of us don't want to see hockey games with basketball scores. Goalie equipment has evolved just like player equipment, but for us it's considered a bad thing.

AGREED! (Last Paragraph)

Now my Friend With ODB said that my Graf skates already had them. I know what they looklike and there is no attackment on the bottom of my skate like his. So is he the crazy one or am I.

which ref will really look at each goalie skate each game?? come on...it like using a illegal blade..

Refs in my area were instructed to look for them. USAH considers it a safety issue as much as anything else.
