Got my MIA Glove (pic and story)

Recommended Posts

WHO CARES? Chadd I understand where your coming from but its like your out to get this company. If you have a problem with the gloves dont buy them. Its just a name.

It's just a matter of principle to me. In many parts of the US there is a strong sentiment to buy american made goods and this branding does not appear to be ethical to me.

As my uncle says quite often "I make my money in america, I spend my money in america"

He uses the term AMERICA, but he doesn't mean Quebec.

Sounds well cultured...

Yeah, his MBA from Boston University is a pretty piece of paper.

Understood, I wouldnt buy it anyways cause it says made in america. To me its like whereing a Russia shirt when Im not russian or something. Technically, they can use made in america but realistically no Canadian considers themselves American.

You ever wear a replica NHL jersey? You are not on the team, so why wear the jersey?? Straight up, just wear and use the stuff you think is comfortable, regardless of what your affiliation may or may not have to do with anything.

Not fair, thats a different situation. And I was talking about me personally.

How is it a different situation?? I have a shirt that says Canada on it. I'm not Canadian, I still wear it. I have a team Finland hockey hat, I'm not Finnish and I still wear it. Just think on your own and wear what you want. Its no different from hockey gear to street clothes.

I just guess more people would wear their favourite teams hockey jersey then wearing a countries jersey that they arent related to. Im not saying its impossible and again I was talking about myself.

Thx mack :P ..so you like my gloves?

Yeah, I like the traditional rolls and the carbon isn't as bad as I thought. My beef with them (and it's not yours personally) is how they seem to all have to have those stripes in the middle.

And chadd your uncle spend is cash in the usa but 60% of the goods are made oversea so he his sending his money on they other side of the world.

Actually I think all of their gloves are ugly but that has nothing to do with this entire topic and it has nothing to do with your particular pair. Honestly, I'm glad you're happy with them.

What the hell does my uncle have to do with this? And could you specify what uncle? I have 6 or 7 and none play hockey or have a clue about it.

I am leading by example, I see something I believe is wrong and I speak out about it. If you think having an opinion is trolling, you really have a lot to learn. I appreciate the fact that some people disagree with me, but I notice that others have some issues as well. Difference of opinion is a good thing.

My beef with them (and it's not yours personally) is how they seem to all have to have those stripes in the middle.

I couldn't agree more.

If I got customs from Eagle or MIA I'd have no brand on the cuff but I don't know if they go for it. I'd definitely change the "Made In America" to "Maid In America" after my favourite movie, too.

I would question whether they say they are made in america.  Its the company name, not fraud.  You can name your company whatever you want.  You can name your company "The World's Greatest Painters".  You're probably not the greatest, but its not fraud to have that as your name.  Now, if in there add the put they were the greatest, then it would be Fraud, but I haven' seen advertised that they are made in America.  And the country is actually called United States of America, there isn't really a country named America.  Splitting hairs, but you can call your company whatever you want.

I think calling them Frauds is a little anal.

We disagree. There are several FTC rulings on using the term "Made in USA" I fail to see why this is any different. If anyone can show me where the term "America" is used in reference to Canada, I'd be happy to see it.

America isnt very definitive Chadd. What continent is Canada in? North AMERICA. If these gloves were made to say "Made in the USA" and made in Canada, I would hav a bit of a problem with them. However, even if they are made in Quebec, they are still made in "america", not the "united states" of America.

I'm so damn late...I hate opening a thread, going to do something, then typing a reply only to have what you said alot earlier.

For shame...

I already noted the North America issue, but if you, like I said earlier, use the popular definition of America like most people do, then you are referring to the USA. No one from Canada ever goes about touting him/herself as an "American," b/c they're from North America. They use the term "Canadian," or "North American."

I agree with Chadd that they should be named MIA, if it stands for Made in America.

All this shit makes me wonder how the hell the terms America/American in their popular definitions came to be used to refer to the USA/it's citizens exclusively.

Would it be ok to have a product called "Made in Canada" yet have it manufactured in some other country without any mention of that location?

No. The rules about registering companies names are pretty the same everywere,

you cant put a name on a product that dont resemble the features of that product (example: cant put a name on a pants for example "Nyloners 8000" and they don't have nylon in them).

However they are made in America (think of an italian glove company that have "Made in Europe" as his name for example).

But i think if there is mentioned on them "made in Canada" there is no problem.

I think the matter is: would the place where gloves have been produced considered as a quality of the product by the consumer (or customer or whatever you call the guy that buy)? (like for example the materials etc..)

Would the name America been confused with USA by the consumer?

I think that the office that let MIA register it's name have already answer this questions.

Anyway i will check USA and CANADA laws on copyrights, and naming of product.

Oh, the gloves are simply amazing, too bad they cost to much for me...

The problem is the continent is North America, not America.

Just like "America's" name is the United States of America.

Yes, that's the full name of this country. How many other countries have the word America in them?

Well, most countries in the world arent as cocky as the United States of America to grab posession of the continent and call it "their own". ;)

In their defence, if anyone has the right to it'd be them.

Why's that? B/c they have the most nukes? If anyone has the right to claim a continent as their own, it's the nation with the largest land mass. That's Canada.

Because most people are only concerned about nationality (at most) and don't think in global terms.

c'mon guys what happened to the good old days of wearing equipment because its right for you? This thread is getting waaaaay too political

I love arguing about semantics, and as those that have read some of my posts over the last year and a half know, I love arguing for the sake of arguing. You can't get away from it here, and I think we all know that there are also a few mods that like to stir up the pot a little every now and then...

Everything is political, man, this board houses a lot of fiercely nationalist Americans (and by Americans I mean citizens of the USA) that have been raised and bred to be so by their perpetually and woefully misguided and moronic head of state.

That being said, there are a number of fiercely nationalist Canadians as well, and being good Canadians, despise a lot of what "America," stands for. Thus, I'm surprised that more Canadian folks HAVEN'T shown up here to bitch about a Canadian company's products being branded Made in America. I can understand the American people's aversion to this, but c'mon CANADA, let's stand up for our own Country's identity (or lack thereof).

Now, of course, being based in Quebec, as I have said before, it could be an entirely contained political statement by the company, if in fact the family that runs the company is that of a separatist nature and believes that Quebec should be it's own sovereign state.

Look at what the States has done over time; it can put a chip on anyone's shoulder.
