So i bought a 1990 Acura Integra GS this summer that was mechanically sound but needed a paint job. I got the car for $2900.00 and havent painted it yet as it is near winter. A guy from school is now selling his 1992 Toyota 4 runner for $5700. I am a little stuck on the situation. Pretty much just wondering what a person would do in this situation

5700 dollars is a fair bit of money for a 92 4 runner, and those arn't exactly the most reliable cars on the road.

Where do you live?

Good question. Maybe it's just my bad luck, but I haven't had great experiences with Toyota. However, if you do trust them, I know some ppl with friggin' late 80s Camry and Corolla beaters that still run like they're new.

Just slap some snows on the GS. It's not like it's a Porsche, it can take some snow and salt, and I'm sure you won't cry if it gets a ding.

I had a 90 integra, was my first car, bought it with 125000km drove it until 200000km. great little car. Handles good in the winter. If your concerned about that, slap on some winter tires. Great on gas compared to the 4-Runner. However I own a Toyota now and I find it to be better put together overall.

Stick with the integra. As people have said, just throw on some good quality winter tires and you'll be fine. I live a couple hours away from winnipeg and drive a honda prelude with winter tires on it, and my car does just fine in winter, and we get just as much snow here as you would in regina.

ride a bike so the planet doesn't burn up

stick with the integra

Yeah, think of the benefits you'll gain for hockey from riding your bike in two feet of snow everyday. Imagine the power you'll build up in your glutes and legs trying to keep the bike from skidding around/flipping!

Or you buy a North American vehicle so 15'000 people don't loose their jobs...just an idea.

I feel bad for those people that are gonn lose their jobs. But I have no love loss with GM, Chrysler, Ford, It's time for them to step up and stop selling garbage vehicles ans service. They got to start producing better quality and earth friendly vehicles.

The Geo was a rebadged Suzuki swift I think, Just like the Aveo and Pontiac Wave, they're Swifts.

That's one good thing about GM, They used engines like Toyota's Matrix and put it in their Vibe vehicles. Making it more affordable but still getting a quality Toyota engine.

GM's quality is shit eh? I guess that would mean the best built cars in the WORLD are build right here in my home town. Ask J.D. Power, or even Harbour, any of the current Buick sedans, the Impala, the Monte and every single truck built are tops in the WORLD (for their price range). The quality is actually so good here they are bringing back the Firebird and Camero to the GM line up to compete with the Charger and the Mustang, in a retro style, with their new 450 horse V-8 in them. If you don't believe me, wait and see. Good luck saying that about Toyota, who by the way pays their employees less on average than GM, has worse coverage, and hires less North American workers. Oh ya, their profits move back to Japan. Way to support your neighbours. Ever heard the expression don't bite the hand that feeds... remember that when where you work goes under becasue you helped put your neighbours our of business and they can't afford your service/good. That is if your job doesn't go to a Jap also.

(note: I have no racial issues with the Japenese, they are very smart business oriented people, unfortunately that rubs off on alot of us and we end up shelling out money to them)

true say dan the man. i'm tired of people ranting and raving about how american cars are shit. that argument would have held groun in the 90's, but now, it's just ludicrous. cars like the chrysler 300C/dodge magnum/charger, they're basically built with mercedes drivetrain components. ford's new fusion is based on the mazda 6 platform (which has won pretty much every award for it's category). american cars are not any worse than japanese cars, especially when you take into account their cost (they usually sell much below list price when incentives like cashback and 0% financing add up). It's no longer the japanese that are making quality cars

Exactly, although my article did sound very much like it was only for GM, thats not exactly true, I did neglect to mention the awards that Chrystler has won recently for the 300C and other vehicles. Buy North American cars, bring business back home!

Geo was a company. If you are talking about the Metro, they also did use toyota 3 banger engines

That has nothing to do with the cars quality. Its that the American car companies are in a big need of selling alot of cars, and quick. The "retro" vehicles havent done very well, at all. Mustang sales are down, and the GTO was an absolute atrocity.

Good luck saying that about Toyota, who by the way pays their employees less on average than GM, has worse coverage, and hires less North American workers. Oh ya, their profits move back to Japan.

They pay they're employees less, so what. That means that the Japanese car will be far less cheaper than the American made one. Everyone wants to save money, and cars arent exactly a cheap item.

Last time i checked, people have the freedom to spend they're money wherever/whenever they want. Competition drives down prices, and in the end, the buyer wins all the time. Afterall, they are paying the bills of the manufacturer.

The one thing american companies have going for them, is that they make great SUV's/Trucks. That class will always be dominated by the americans, imo.

German motowerks are still king.

Actually, the Japanese still make quality cars. I don't dispute the fact that some domestic models are of fine quality (300s and Lincolns), most of the low end is shit. They're making strides, but GM and Ford need to keep up with Daimler.

W/regard to SUVs - I'm not sure all those recalls on Ford Explorers qualify as "quality."

Actually, aren't most Toyotas and Hondas being sold in North America actually built in the U.S.? I'm pretty sure this is the case, and probably a few other Japanese car companies have followed the trend. I think even Hyundai had opened a few plants in the U.S. So they're actually paying everyday blue collar Americans to work in their factories and assemble their import cars. Not sure about the wage comparisons to Detroit, but A JOB still pays better than NO JOB (layoffs).

How about buy and drive the car you want because you want it and for the reasons you want to? If you want a big SUV, well there's only so many on the market, take your pick. If you want a small reliable gas sipper, get that. It's your money after all. We'd all be driving Smartcars if nobody had a preference.

Personally I like the big American SUV and German sedans. But there's no denying that a small reliable import that gets great gas mileage comes in handy, and there are some very well put together ones at that. At the same time there's some bad ones, but there are bad German cars too.
