The Senators

Ok, should we just hand these guys the friggin' cup now, or what? This 39 goal differential is ridiculous. They've scored the most and allowed the fewest goals in the league...this must be a first of some kind...

These guys are so unstoppable, it's disgusting. It's more or less one line too, which two years back meant zero depth (yeah, I know, Marty "Cowardly Bastard" Havlat has been a one man wrecking crew since he came back), but who needs a second line anyway, when no one can stop your first one?

They've got the best scoring line, the best D and for the moment, the best goalie. How did THAT happen?! Their cap is busted next year. I can't even think of one team that matches up on paper...this is ruuuuude.

So much for parity.

Of course, I only rant b/c I recently dropped these guys in my salary cap game due to their crap schedule for the next week. Hell, it probably doesn't even matter. They'll probably score in one game for me as many points as any other team does in three.

EDIT: I mean, these games aren't even close...I'm not sure I can see these guys lose two in a row all year, right now, let alone losing very many single games at that...

man they had some pretty goals tonight....they're my pick for the cup, but i wouldnt necessarily just 'hand' it to them just yet, it's still early in the season.

Teams that could match Sens ?

Flyers : quite sure about the attack...but the goalie ?

Wings : petty balanced team

And for the surprise : Leafs or Montreal

I'm kind of feeling a canadian year <_<

A couple of key injuries and the wheels are falling off this cart. Lets say Hasek pulls a groin and Emery comes in. I know Emery won't see tons of shots but those key quality saves from Hasek are now goals. Take a couple of hits to the forwards and the goal scoring spree is over. The NHL season from start to the Cup Final: its a marathon, not a sprint.

Sens will still probably play Leafs in playoffs. I think its mandatory. And the result of that lovefest? Hmmmmmm.......

Finally, Coach Murray: isn't he the guy who could screw up a two car parade down a one way street?

They're the millenium's Nordalanche. I still hate the bastards but won't trade them from any of my pools. I say the Leafs take them down in the playoffs, only because of history and karma.

No...the Senators are not the Spurs of the NHL. The Spurs have won multiple championships. The Sens have won zero. I'd say right now they're like the St. Louis Rams of 99-00. They are blowing people away during the regular season. The Rams won the Super Bowl that year...so maybe the Sens will win the Cup this season.

Being in Leafs town, you hate to compliment the Sens, bud damn they are good! I'm waiting for them to prove themselves vs. the Leafs in the playoffs too.

I suppose we should just forget about Detroit and hand the cup to the Sens, eh?

Detroit has had, if not the easiest, one of the easiest schedules in the league. Last I checked the Sens had the most difficult (statistically). I still think Vancouver, Philly, Vancouver possibly Detroit are as good as them, but they can also be upset at any point.

The Sens have put together an outstanding record playing in what I believe is the toughest division in the NHL so they've impressed me so far, but they're by no means guaranteed a Stanley Cup. Upsets happen, teams run into injuries or hot goalies and the most talented team does not always win. Ottawa would be a favourite to win the cup for sure, but there are several teams that have a legitimate shot at winning the cup.

You're right. Plus Detroit is playing in the same division as the Blues, Blackhawks, and Bluejackets and all three of those teams are bad. But shouldn't Detroit be included in the conversation? Anytime a team has the most points they shouldn't be ignored. It's the same kind of attitude that people were using to dismiss the White Sox this year.

That said, I am a Blues fan so I hope Detroit falls off the map.

Detroit has indeed had a powderpuff schedule, and it doesn't get much more difficult in the weeks to come.

And on paper, I would definitely say that the Wings do not mach the Sens. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are fine players, but Zetterberg has cooled significantly from his hot start. While they'll be stars for years to come, they are not, IMO, on the level that Spezza/Heatley/Alfredsson are at the moment.

What the Wings do have, at the moment, is a blazing hot goalie, and a more than qualified backup, just as the Sens do.

Where the Wings may be better though, is in depth of offense and balance. They're getting scoring from everyone, but for the Sens, it drops off after the top 4 guys. In DET, they've got 6 guys going well. The D isn't half bad either...potential Cup Final? Maybe. I'm hoping for Vancouver to get the wheels going though. I'd love to see an All Canadian matchup. Bettman would have a fit.

I think coaching has been their biggest weakness over the last few years. If they had a more aggressive coach they would have had at least one cup by now.
