Carbon Steel

Recommended Posts

With carbon steel blades is it normal for the chrome outer coating to peel a little bit or is that a defect? How will this affect the blade long term? I don't think its a huge deal but I've seen some people get pretty irate about it.

It's normal, not a defect. Doesn't effect anything except makes it easier to rust.

BTW, folks who pay $59 for a pair of skates shouldn't get upset, you get what you pay for.

Amen to that.....We had to stop using Carbon steel on or low low end skates because of the complaints....

It's the low-carbon steel that sucks, way too soft. High carbon steel will actually hold an edge longer than the best stainless, but few if any use high carbon. I was talking with the Hotblades salesman the other day (they use high carbon) and he was telling me they may be the supplier for Warrior's new skates. They are working the deal.

I hope that works out, I really like the hotblades, they are great. They don't use the cheap chrome plating, rather a tough nickle coating developed by the US Navy to resist salt water corrosion. Way different than the $59 skates.

BTW, I credit Mission with using stainless on it's lower end skates. I personally think low carbon steel should be banned! I really get tired of folks saying they got their blades sharpened and they are dull after two skates. Duh, what do you expect??

It's nice to tell customers that the Missions we sell won't do that while I'm sharpening a trashed pair of youth skates.

This guy comes in with goal skates, seems he wanted them sharpened for a HS "reunion" game. Hadn't used them in 10 yrs, were in his damp basement the entire time. They were solid rust. After a good crossgrind and about 60 passes I told him, there was no getting below the rust because they were ALL rust all the way thru! Some shops around here charge more for rust removal.

someone should make a rust proofer... like, for the offseason, spray or put this product onto your skates to keep them from rusting. actually, i guess WD-40 should work the same. any thoughts?

coat them with vasoline. It's petroleum based and essentially waterproof.

I use Liquid Wrench when stoning skates after sharpening them. It will remove rust and helps the stone when de-burring the skate. I have been using Liquid Wrench over 25 years. It works very well.
