Fog bowl

I skated at Hersheypark arena on Sunday right before they melted the ice for the summer. You can tell that there's no AC an it was starting to get a little warm. We took a bunch of pictures since there's a rumor going around that there may only be ice in there for one more year.

Sweet. When I was at school up in Boston I played in 2 games that looked like that at the Northeastern Rink before they melted the ice for the summer. Come to think of it, I may have skated on the ice at walter brown at BU right before the end of the semester and it was like that as well. Id rather have that then deal with a humid roller hockey rink any day.

As I said in the chat room, I've done that quite a few times on early Saturday morning games, after an event like the Rodeo the night before back when I lived in Nashville.

That's not bad. You should have been around hear last year. The Chiller rink in Dublin got so bad that you could not see past the bluelines. It was really bad for some reason.

Everynight I played it was raining.

That old arena looks awesome, sure would have liked to play in there, must feel like the people are on top of you when that was full packed.

It's a great rink, I'd love to see them keep it in operation for a while but I doubt it will last much longer. The fog isn't nearly as bad from above as it was down on the ice.

Last year at CreationFest 2003 (Christian week long camp/concert/seminar thing) I was in there to watch a couple shows, 38th parallel being one. I thought the arena was really nice, and the seats are nice and close, and close to the floor. Its a shame it might be closing down.

Heh, in that same rink our semifinal round a couple weeks ago we had the power go out in the middle of the second period.. it was out for a good 15-20 minutes... even the compressors were out. Fog AND darkness (the scoreboard and emergency lights were on)... creepy :)

Is that the same arena the Ice Dogs play in?

The Mississaugua Ice Dogs? They play in the Hershey Centre. I'm guessing that is the Arena that the Hershey Bears play in, I think ljack lives near there.

It's the Arena the Hershey Bears used to play in. A lot of history in and around that building. Grapes met his wife when he was here, Wilt scored 100 points in a game and the Bears won a couple of Calder Cups. There's a large amusement park in Hershey PA along with the old arena and the new Giant Center where the bears play now.

Didn't that happen in an NHL playoff game a loooong time ago?

I believe it was the Habs/Bruins at Boston Garden. Someone help me here.

I remember seeing that on Espn Classic and they made the players skate around the rink to try to lift the fog. For those who have read Zamboni Rodeo it sounds like it's a pretty common occurence down in the south.

That happened to me this year, except there were no emergency lights. Funny thing was, a huge fight started and then the lights went out, so it kept on going.

HPA is the oldest hockey arena in North America. What a great old building. It would be a shame if they took out the ice for good.

It's a year or two newer than Maple Leaf Gardens. It's a great old building though.

I'm sure it is. I know the title is depentent upon being the oldest rink to see continous hockey since it was built. Also, since they aren't using the Gardens for hockey anymore it's technically not a hockey rink now but that's splitting hairs.

The arena is only used for youth hockey practices, old guys who want to skate and one local college has their home games there.

its really too bad that Maple Leaf Gardens is being turned into a Loblaws, my friend had a pair of season tickets right almost right behind the net, 3rd/4th row

<_<

I thought they pulled out of the deal?

when was this? i remember reading City of Toronto oked it about 2 weeks ago, and that they were going to start construction. personally, i think it sucks, the gardens is like a shrine, turning it into a grocery store is so degrading
