Neckguard or not, if you get a hard enough blow to the neck wouldn't that crush your vital stuff in your neck/throat and kill you anyways? Say your down and somehow the heel of someones skate boot swings up or across or whatever and catches you in the throat? I know my neckguard won't protect very much for a blunt blow to my throat.

Better than nothing, just ask Trent McCleary.

That's just about the time when I stopped going down to block shots.

I dont know the situation, pardon my ignorence but I assume he got a puck to the throat? I can see how the neckguard would help against a grazing steel blade, but then again mines 3 seasons old and pretty thin and flimsy so who knows if it would or not.

Yes, McCleary got a puck in the throat...he almost died on the ice as well. I don't recall the exact injuires, but I know he couldn't breath.

Malarchuk (in that vid) was cut by a skate blade.

On a similar note...was Dave Manson's raspy voice the result of a puck in the throat or a punch in the throat? I can't remember.

You wouldn't get throat cancer from swollowing chew once. My buddy had to stomache it once in class, he just puked alot after lol. Ask JR, he's an avid dipper, he's probably pitted some before.

I think Koivu is the guy that got cancer from chew.

I've gutted spit a few times, but the one time I gutted the pinch... well, let's just say I got sick, plain and simple...

I don't think Koivu got cancer from chewing...at least I don't remember reading anything about that...

Ah come on now. Sitting in class for an hour your stomach gets tough, or in that office meeting for a good amount of time even. When the teacher says whats in your mouth, you learn to gut quite a few pinches. My all time favorite is to have a piece of gum on the opposite side of the pinch. When you get called out, you just show 'em the gum.

Crushed larynx, he never was able to get back his full breathing capabilities after that one. They had to do a tracheotomy before he left the rink if I remember correctly.

Nothing against Saku, he's a good player and all, and cancer is no joke...but what kind of crazy sh*t are they doin over in Finland that they are swallowing dip. And enough to get cancer from it. Jeez.

Swallowing dip and all-night Sauna parties. Wierd. I can't stay in a sauna for more than 20 minutes, and Finns stay in it all night.

I think you could stay in one all night if you saw the kinda girls that frequented all-night sauna parties... ;)
