which kind o car?

im not saying im getting a car, but if i were getting a used car with like a 10K cap, which would be best for snow / best looking / chicks would dig :P ? i would want a maual too. i was thinking BMW (you can get pretty good deals, like '99 3 series for 9K, but i hear they suck in the snow. therefore, audi sounds like an interesting option, and they look pretty fresh too. i was thinking jeep wrangler, but i dont think i want to spend $$$$$$$$$$ on a 12 mpg vehicle. so lets stick to sexy sedans here. an example of a great place to get great deals on cars is craigslist.com (then just go to your local market, ex boston.craigslist.com)

If you wanna do some searching- look for an original mid '80s Audi Quattro. They still look good and were designed for snow. A solid Subaru SVX would be nice too.

Those were sick. I agree with others so far, the insurance on a BMW/Audi will kill you, especially if you are under 25 and male. Unless of course, your parents are willing to foot the bill...

BMWs do suck in the snow, if you get one, make sure you save $ for snow tires, unless you spring for an AWD model.

I wonder how much and old 2.5RS (pre-WRX/STI when it was the shit) goes for...

When you say "good in the snow" I'm assuming you want a car with AWD...

I personally am trying to save up for a 3000GT VR4 next year, I love the looks, performance, and its got AWD so it'd be ok in crappy MI winters. Only problem is finding a good, reliable one because people tend to beat the hell out of those cars. The 2nd gen Eclipse GSX's also have AWD and are nice looking but same thing... hard finding one in good shape that hasn't been abused.

I think some RWD cars are ok in the snow too as long as they have things like traction control, ABS, etc. you just need to be careful.

No whiter than IROCs. When I lived in Pittston I was the only one in town without an IROC and a vowel at the end of my name.

I would caution getting in above your head, and by that I mean Audi's and BMW's, Merc's and even some porsches will drop into your price range. The getting in over your head comes when something goes wrong and you need to get it fixed. Parts and labor on most German cars is not for the faint of heart of the light of the wallet. Early 90's 7-series BMW's have dropped into the price range of people they were never intended for, and repairs are astronomical and catch many owners by surprise, just an example.

My advice would not be to blow my entire wad on the car's price but save some for the problems that will naturally arise through the course of ownership. For example look at the cost of tires for the cars you've mentioned, and if you do get a set of snows look at that too.

For the record I had an 85 Audi 4000 Quattro loved it but I put a lot of money into when I first bought it, and then occasionally I'd have to put money in to fix things that went wrong, after a while I bought the car again in repairs, I loved the car and I regret selling but at some point you need to cut your losses.

A RWD car is perfectly fine in the snow if you don't drive like an idiot. My buddy is carpooling today, modded 2003 cobra with blizzacks. 450+ ft-lbs of torque to the wheels is only an inch of throttle away, and somehow he hasn't crashed it yet in a couple of winters.

Get an old Subaru wagon. Might be able to pick up an early outback in that price range. Stay away from any 1996 models with the 2.5 engine unless you like paying for head gasket repairs.

I Love my Subaru, I can beat the shit out of it and it keeps on rollin, plows through snow, and has lots of room for gear.

As a bonus, a lot of insurance providers classify it as a station wagon which gives you cheaper rates.

AWD cars are meant to improve traction on pavement, not drive better in bad weather. Tires and clearance make a big difference.

Good point. It's not the actual parts that kill you, it's the labour. Small shit used to cost me upwards of $600 and let's not even get into the engine repair/rebuilding... :angry:
