What is Boxing Day?

Day after X-mas, in Canada most crap goes on sale big-time. Clears out left-over inventory for the new year. Alot of stuff is like 25-40% off.

Boxing day is primarily Canadian and it is very crazy. A few stores per mall have to limit how many people are allowed in and there are a few camp outs.

Same in Australia.

Apparently everyone used to open their presents on boxing day and spend the day with the family on Christmas.

Same crazy sales here.

I haven't been to a boxing day sale for the past few years...hate fighting the crowd.

From what I can remember, it does get pretty crazy fighting for parking spots and lining up to get into stores etc. But nothing compares to the US Black Friday...stores don't open up at 4am in the morning here.

We were at the Woodbury Outlet Mall last year with the brother in law...got there around 9:30am and we see people leaving already.

is it just a candian tradition then...??

I think so

No it's not just a Canadian tradition, but unlike Canada our post christmas sales don't start till Jan 1st.

Why is it called boxing day in the first place. is it because people had to fight (punch) each other just to get a product ?  :P

i think it's cause it use to be that almost anything that didn't sell before x-mas that they wanted to get rid of it then, or else they would boxit all up and put it away

don't know for sure thought

Reduced to the simplest essence, its origins are found in a long-ago practice of giving cash or durable goods to those of the lower classes. Gifts among equals were exchanged on or before Christmas Day, but beneficences to those less fortunate were bestowed the day after.

And that's about as much as anyone can definitively say about its origin because once you step beyond that point, it's straight into the quagmire of debated claims and dueling folklorists. Which, by the way, is what we're about to muddy our boots with.
