Toughest Jew ever to play hockey

Recommended Posts

I know with the holidays xmass is today and shit, but its hannukah on the 26th, so this is for jewish members:

Lawrence Zeidel

Nicknamed 'The Rock,' Zeidel was a tough, rugged defenseman known as the 'fastest stick in the Midwest' but it was not for his stickhandling. Larry was involved in more stick swinging incidents than anyone else in the game's history, and was known to use his stick as a spear when he deemed it necessary. He and Eddie Shack got into an infamous altercation where they brandished their sticks like dueling sabres and tried to scalp one another, after Shack made an anti-Semitic remark. Zeidel, who picked up an incredible 3,144 penalty minutes in his 25-year career, was almost expelled from the WHL in the early 1960s for another stick swinging incident.

In 1955, Larry showed how tough a player he was when he blocked a shot with his head but continued to play in the game. He was later ejected, which probably saved his life; he learned after the game that he sustained a serious skull fracture. When asked how he had become such a rough player, Zeidel said: "I guess there are a couple of reasons. First, I played some senior hockey in Quebec City and we could play well and win, but the fans would rather have us involved in a real brawl and lose the game. There were a lot of rugged guys in the league at that time, too, so maybe it was partly a matter of survival. The other thing is that there's the big thing of being young and having stars in your eyes. The clubs themselves are as much or more to blame. They play up the tough guys. Guts, guts, guts is all you hear from a lot of coaches and managers, even as early as junior (leagues). I was playing for some coaches and managers who would tell me 'go get him,' so I did."

Lawrence "The Hebrew Hammer" Zeidel!!!

Lol.

I'm pretty sure Bernie Nichols was Jewish. He wasn't a tough guy, but he was a good player.

I'm also pretty sure "Ilya" is a russian name for "Abraham". And Abraham is typically a Jewish name. So I'm thinking anyone with a the name "Ilya" has a good chance of being Jewish...Ilya...Kovalchuk...Bryzgalov.

Why does it matter whether they're jewish, christian, muslim, atheist, black, white, red, yellow or green?

I assume you are Jewish and, for you, it's a source of pride to see other Jewish athletes do well. But doesn't it lead to exclusion when you want to see how well your group does against other groups?

What I mean by this is, as a non-Jewish person, I have no idea who's Jewish or not. I don't pay attention to last names and whether Kapstein might be a Jewish person. So instead of seeing a player and saying, "Wow, he's pretty good for being Jewish," I think, "Wow, that guy's good!"

Its the "Minority" effect... B)

Jews have proved to be extremly talented and creative in pretty much everything (from arts to science) throughout the human history so their sporting achievments should not surprise anyone...

Respect to Jews and you, yglod, have a good hannukah!

PS in the future maybe its better for the mods not to allow "racially themed" topics- there no problem when everyone stays positive, but just to prevent an occasional idiot spoiling the great atmosphere of these forums :)

Black and white, unite, and Happy New year everybody! :D

#96 all your predictions are wrong lol

I'm surprised about Bernie Nichols not being Jewish. Bernie is a BIGTIME Jewish name indicator, and Nichols can be Jewish.

This reminds me of a game on the Howard Stern Show called "Guess The Jew" where they name celebrities and you have to pick which one is Jewish.

You'd be very surprised.

He's only half.

Schneider's mother converted to Judaism when she married his father, and Mathieu says, "I am a proud Jew and I will bring up my kids to be proud Jews."

I'd say it counts.

Lighten up, man. It's just some humor within the religion.

Also, Halpern's jewish. He was a healthy scratch for his game on Yom Kippur this year.

My apologies because it was lost on me that it was a joke -- I had thought it was meant to be more serious.

I wonder how many people have actually seen the Adam Goldberg movie, "The Hebrew Hammer."

The family guy on this subject was pretty damn funny

Or every south park...ever.

""Cartman: The poor kid passes it to the Jew, the Jew shoots. He misses! Proving once and for all that Jews cannot play hockey!

Kyle: Shut up Cartman! Your body is bigger than the goal!

Cartman: No, I just have a sweet hockey body.
