NHL star out of the South

Recommended Posts

I don't know about Raleigh, but I'm sure he isn't the first one to play in the NHL with a Southern hometown/birthplace.

Notice I said Southern hometown/birthplace. Any player coming out of the south will have to make a stop in a few places that aren't in the south - the NAHL, EJHL, USHL, Canadian Jr - Tier II and Major Jr. to make it to the show. More than likely they'll have been billeting to play for a top Bantam or Midget AAA program, or gone to prep school from the time they hit puberty.

Brian Leetch was born in Corpus Christi, TX, but what his hockey card doesn't tell you is that his family moved back to CT shortly after and he grew up there. His dad also played at Boston College.

There is a kid who plays for Fargo-Moorhead Jets out of the NAHL named Kai Kantola who was born in Toronto but moved to raleigh when he was like 8 or so, so basically he could be considered from the south. He is 18 played a little in Finland and leads their team in pts. and goals dont know what kinda NHL ability he has but he is doing very well in the NAHL. Maybe thats who your refering too?

Central Scouting hasn't released a combined list yet, only a "Players to Watch" list and Preliminary Ranking lists seperated by league, the OHL, QMJHL, WHL and NCAA, as well as a European list by country. Kantola plays in the NAHL so he isn't ranked on any of the lists, but he is on the "A" Watch List. Granted, all of this stuff will change many times over between now and July.

He played there, but Leetch went to Avon Old Farms and exceled there before he was a coveted athlete. He is one Avon's distinguished alumni and in their Hall of Fame, on a long list of DI hockey talent that has gone through that school.

jeremy roenick went to my middle school in Chantilly Va... left to go to prep i beleive

Roenick lived in VA for a while before his family moved back to MA. While living in VA, he used to fly up each weekend to play for the NJ Rockets. He eventually ended up at Thayer Academy and then went on to the Q because he was too dumb to pass Clearinghouse.
