Anyone ever use Inno 420 flex for ice hockey?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, hope I'm not letting the cat outta the bag but I found an Inno shaft on ebay thats a 420 flex shaft. I looked at the flex chart and that is crazy low, but how would that shaft be for ice hockey? I've heard people say its a "roller hockey" flex, but I dont know why. Lighter puck or something? I know Hull used crazy low flex, but I dont get sticks for free and if I'd snap it after a couple uses I dont want to bid. I'm using an 85 UL shaft right now, how much more flex will the inno 420 be from someone whos used them?

I thought Hull's Inno flex was around 400. I've never used the 420, so I can't say for sure, but I think it'd be way too whippy even coming from an 85.

I use to have a innovative 1100 in 420 flex, and I didn't like it for ice, and recently just sold it. It's a pretty good shaft for roller; however, for ice, it's just too whippy. All my one-timers and slap shots all ended being weak flub shots. Only thing that was unaffected was the wrist shot, in which were rockets.

The 420 were made for Hull or to Hull's Specs, the 440's were the "Inline Flex" shafts. I'd say its around a 65 flex (the 420), so if you think you can handle it, go for it.

See I thought it might be good because I very rarely take slapshots, the only time I do is on the penalty kill to clear it or if I'm one on one in while on the PK I just wind up and let 'er fly. I thought if I got that real low flex I might get some more zip on the wrist shot.

Did it help your wrister or do you just have a good wrister as is?

I've taken great one timers and slapshots with whippy sticks (close to a Hull flex). It just felt like I was stickhandling with a noodle and I had to make sure that I didn't try and put too much force into my shots (if you did, they'd go all over the place). If it's cheap and you like whippy sticks, give it a shot. It's definitely an acquired taste though.

It's much more about having the right form and technique with a whippy stick. Not many people can adapt.

I traded my brother an SL warranty replacement for his Whip flex R+ (75 Easton according to the flex chart) and the only problem I really have is with slapshots from the blueline when we warm up the goalies in practice because I haven't really worked on slapshot technique with it all that much. If you mentally get past the fact that it isn't going to snap on you and are a reasonable size for it then I say go for it if the price is right.

I have a 420 flex 1100 that I use for ice. Slap shots are not quite as good because if you put too much into it, it flexes too much and it's slow. You have to let the stick do the work, as Brett Hull says. Wrist shots, however, are a different story. They're rockets. Wrist shots with this stick for me are nearly as hard as slappers with my 1100 Fused (260 flex), however I'm not much of a slapper guy. That's the reason I got the 420 flex shaft. If you are like me, and basically not slappers, I'd go for it.
