I tried on the XXX gloves when I was at National Sports the other day looking at other things and I must admit they're probably the most comfortable and flexible gloves I've tried on ever. I'm not really in the market for new gloves as I already have two pairs that I'm happy with, however; if they were less than $100 I would've been tempted...at $199 Canadian plust tax (or something like that - don't quote me on the exact price, but it was high) it was pretty easy for me to walk away. In a year or two when I'm looking for new gloves they'll get some consideration...especially if they're clearanced priced.

Keep an eye out on ebay - I saw a pair go for 100$US the other day which is about 120$CAD.

I got my 30's from hockey monkey 100 bucks U.S. I think some kid wore them and returned them. :D

That's where MSH and the internet come into play :) I really like my LHS and if it's a 10 or 20 dollar difference I'm supporting them all the way, but when I got my skates for half of what my LHS was asking, my Vapor 30's for half what my LHS was asking, and some Synthesis/Synthesis Sicore blades for about a third of what they're selling for instore I just can't afford to buy that stuff locally. Lots of good deals to be found on here.

The Vapor V's are awesome. If you don't entirely need all of those extra protective foams and just play lightly in men's league or shinny, then go for it. I think that for the money that you spend on them ($45 Can in my store), they're totally worth it. Super light and super mobile.

Not sad. Your internet site gives you NOTHING, no free sharpeneing, no free heat molding, no free comfort adjustments, no free minor repairs, and certainly not proper sizing. You get service when you buy at your LHS. You cheap bastards are trying to save a few bucks.

I have a customer coming in tomorrow who bought skates elsewhere. They will be paying me $20 for new skate sharpening, $25 for heat molding, and full price for a custom radius, something my customers get for free or severely reduced prices. Plus when they come in for a blade straightening or rivet repair in the future, I'm going to soak them there too. When will you guys get it, service cost money. Some idiot walked out of my store today, seems they did not want to pay the $20 for new skate sharpening. Oh well, try to fingd a shop that will sharpen your internet skates properly for $5. Not going to happen.

watch out for that horrible hand-flesh eating fungus that's going around, I heard it's been found in hockey gloves too.

355 for my skates online vs. 699.99 plus tax for the exact same skates. ~394 dollars will buy me a lot of sharpenings. Like I said, I have no qualms spending an extra couple of dollars at my LHS, heck, for the service I get out of my skate place I would have no trouble spending another 100 dollars on a major purchase like skates. I don't even have a job at the moment, I'm paying for college, transportation to college, room and board, cell phone, books, et all, and I can't justify more than double the price to support my LHS, especially when the main one where I get all my work done doesn't even sell flexlites.

Its one thing to save $10 bucks, it another to save $100. Though I do prefer going to a shop over the internet, I'm not going to turn down a great deal just because its on the internet.

You charge $20 for a sharpening?

20 bucks for a first skate sharpening---what a rip. And you get to provide a service and if its good maybe next time he will spend a little more money at your store for your service..But Im sure you will rag him for buying them online and wala a 1 visit customer! The problem you and most LHS have come down to Overhead, Thus you have to charge more Thus I don't know you but to make up the difference with great service and that would keep the customers coming back. There is a LHS like 2 miles from me, And every time I walk in there not one guy walks up to me...so I stopped trying and If they would of helped me they would of found out I like to spend alot of money on good hockey equipment.....and I used to preach keeping my business local but it comes down to money just like your business. But I do agree with one thing if a person buys online and comes to your store he should'nt be given any deals he needs to pay for your service. Because again this is your chance to keep him coming back. I am a partner in a electrical contracting business and we don't have to advertise why you might ask----word of mouth..great service and if a customer wants me to hang a light they bought from home depot I don't "Soak them" because they did'nt buy it from us I hang it give them grerat service charge them are fees and when they need something like a service change they will call me and I'll take care of them again. But this time I'll make more money because its a bigger job not because the customer did'nt buy the parts from me. I could talk business all day! Now Jimmy your talking business and there is no difference between electrical service and skate service...they are both a service.

Interesting business plan. Here's a counter example for you...

My girlfriend doesn't know how to skate but wanted to learn so I thought it'd be nice if I could get her a pair of skates so she wouldn't have to use the ratty rentals at the public rinks. Since I didn't want to spend a bundle on something she might not stick with, I went looking on eBay and found a bargain on a pair of Mission Bettys for $30. So we go to the LHS where I've always bought my skates to get them baked and sharpened. The tech treated us like crap and they charged $35. After dropping way over $1,000 in that store over the years, I've stopped buying there. And I've told most of my buddies and team-mates about the experience.

Well this "cheap bastard" got his last pair of skates off eBay too and went to another LHS where they said, "Hey great deal on pro returns, do you know who's they were?!" and charged me $10 for the bake and $5 for the sharpen. With my $20 in savings, I bought some laces and tape I didn't really need anyways but figured were good higher margin items for the store. Guess which LHS gets my business now? I've since gone back and bought other gear which I've justified to myself because of the money I saved on the skates.

I sympathize with the challenges that the LHS faces with internet competition but price gouging and treating people like "idiots" isn't going to win you many customers. You can't fault people for trying to save money, they're looking at their bottom-line just like any business. You'll make $45 from that guy tomorrow but why would he want to come back to get "soaked" again? Is that the kind of service you're talking about? Why don't you charge him fair value and find out how much he saved on the skates? Then show him some other great new gear he could go home with using his savings and maybe he'll bite. You might make a sale and gain a customer. At the very least, he'd walk out of your shop with good feeling.

But hey, I'm not a business man. Just a consumer with a wallet and options.

if there a new skate or really sharpened improperly yes because it takes time and effort on them, sharpening isnt cheap stores have to pay for:wheels, diamonds, leather pads, steel wool, cleaning stones, finishing stones. its not cheap plus im sure a place like guy has good sharpening so he would have every right to stick it to somebody who he knew got sized up at his place and then bought skates online

sorry to say this man but dropping over a grand over the years isnt really showing that much loyalty to that store, if it was a grand every few montsh than yes there would be more loyalty there. Anybody can come into a store once year and drop money and not come back for another year or so. 35 bucks for oven heating and sharping sounds like a steal

I'm with you on that one, I love the people who use the line "I'm one of your best customers".......if you have to say that you are then you are probably not.

I do realize that there are always exceptions, but I don't agree with buying online. especially skates, the fits vary way to much to try and guess what is going to fit your foot.

A little tid-bit about one thing we do, especially for the holiday's is that if someone buys a pair a skates as a gift, we won't sharpen them and tell them to come back once they give them, we'll double check the fit, heat 'em, sharpen 'em or return them if they are not the right skate. EITHER WAY its the best way to make sure the player has the right fit

Any business you do at a store you should be treated respectfully. See 1000 bucks aint nothing to a store owner but thats alot to alot of hockey players. you can't put a price on a customers head,I understand that equipment is very exspensive but if I come in your store and buy a roll of tape and a sharpening and you treat me good (Like any business should) then when the skates you sharpened needs to be replaced, were am i going to go---the place that took care of me for 10 bucks. But now I spend 400 bucks....then a month lator I need a new stick...100 bucks---See were I am going with this. I !@#$ hate the well you did'nt buy the skates from me attitude. Then put on your window...WE ONLY WORK ON THE SKATES WE SELL!!! You know alot of us are very lucky..we can afford the vapors and the eagles but alot of kids and adults just want to play the sport. and would'nt dream of spending 1000 bucks over a year...So they should be treated like 2nd class citizens...NO So the Jimmey Business plan thank god isnt around me and my local hockey shops!--well some!

Yes spending money with a shop should earn you some measure of respect.

You shouldn't expect them to kiss your feet every time you walk in teh door though.

How does the shop pay for that $2000 skate oven or that $12000 sharpener if they don't charge to use it?

I agree with the kiss my feet part I have no problem paying for good service.

And yes If I keep giving you my business it should mean more than a little respect it also means you need to keep giving me respect so I will continue to be a repeat customer.

And 3rd I am a partner in a electrical business and yes you need to pay for your equipment

Man Lift 10,000

Wire puller 5,000

Van supplied with tools Aprox 8,000

Electric bender 5,000

I could keep going......

But see you need to be competitive. I have never paid more than 10 bucks U.S for a first skate sharpening and never had one problem. I have never needed to soak a customer to pay for my Pipe bender.......The bottom line is your in a business and in any Business there are competitors and unfortunatly you have to compete with them....Hope fully you do better work or give better advice and then your business will keep growing. there is a fine line that every business owner has to walk How do I provide a product or service At a fair price. there is so many factors I could'nt even type it out but you get the point.

Just for the record I charge $10 for a first time sharpening and $30 to bake. The thing is a lot of people expect it for free. I've offered breaks to some customers but never to a single customer who asks me if I know how much they spent there or asks "do you know who I am?" Those customers are generally the ones that end up costing you more than you make off of them.
