Illegal stick

Recommended Posts

Samsonov just got popped for an illegal stick and both he and the team are really pissed about it. I don't get it, though. If it isn't legal, why be so pissy about it?

I'm sure if they performed more random checks, they'd find a ton of illegal sticks out there. Since they don't, I think more players think they can get away with it.

Isn't it like if you're curve is larger than a quarter on a flat surface, it's illegal. Not sure on the denomination but I remeber something about a coin.

dime

Measured from the bottom of the heel to the bottom of the toe

I remember getting called on it once when I had one of my more violent wedges and I think it was somewhere between a 1/8" and 1/4" curve.

sounds like they measured it incorrectly. I've seen refs trying to measure the middle of the blade and it gives false readings.

Kovalchuk apperantly got in trouble against Nashville earlier in the week for it. He was on for a goal, and then NSH's coach wanted it measured, but he was on the bench and he (or the trainer) ran into the stick room and switched. I only saw a portion of it on SNet, but Nashville's coach (Trapp?) was going nuts.

I saw the pics of samsonov's pro pattern posted recently, and really liked it, figures it's illegal.

Most be a pain in the but for Kovalchuck, has be alert at all times. Think how superstitious he is with his sticks I doubt playing with a (legal) slighty different curve is even an option for him, every shot he takes and misses will make a trip through his mind.... If only.. it would have gone in...

Good ol' Barry Trotz.

Chadd-

I dunno, they probably did goof up where to measure but I got called on it just because it looks like a big curve 'cause of the shovel on it. Then again, I went without a call until I busted out the Kovalchuks which was an experiment gone bad.

I can't see being upset either, I mean it's a black and white rule.

Remember George Brett and the pine tar? He was pretty upset too.

He's just pissed that he got caught. Bet he has seen other players use illegal curves and get away with it, so he's mad that he gets singled out.

why would having a bigger curve be illegal???

The NHL has rules to limit the curve on players sticks. Why they set those limits, I don't know.

It was implemented when not all goalies wore helmets.

A bigger curve gives you better wrist shots and better puck control. I think they should get rid of that rule nowadays. With all the composites out there, players are shooting pucks a helluva lot faster than they did back in like the 50's and 60's. Personally I hate big curves, but hey, to each his own.

I have no problem with the NHL getting rid of the rule but it should remain for youth hockey. Kids aren't learning to use their backhand anymore

its a rule that either needs to be enforced or removed..it can't be a benefit only for certain situations..and since players have both legal and illegal sticks on the bench..it becomes gamesmanship...

so either..sticks are measured and deemed legal before a game..or you get rid of the rule...

Thats what I'd like to see. It can't be a use it when you feel rule, especially when most of the league knows who uses an illegal curve.
