Does certain colored equipment "stand out?"

Recommended Posts

A long time ago in a bantam house league I was using a pair of New Jersey Devil (green with red side stripes) tackla pants and I was getting a lot of penalties. My coach told me to get a shell to cover the green up because he said the refs were "noticing" me out there because everyone else had black pants.

So I get the shell and lo and behold my penalty minutes start decreasing. From that day on I stayed away from all brightly covered equipment on gloves, pants, sticks and helmets.

I've never reffed but I've always wondered if what that Coach told me was true. He's a pretty smart old time hockey guy so I always believed him....haha.

I am going to hopefully get new gloves sometime soon and I really want to go with something else other than Black or dark blue.

If you have something different than what the rest of the team has, than you obviously stand out and are prone to being subjected to more penalty minutes.

I always laugh when a commentator (say the game is Blackhawks/Wings) says something like...

"hmmmm....3 hands on the stick and one is wearing red..."

I'd say you are more likely to get caught doing something if you stand out.

As someone who has reffed for many years, I can tell you that equipment color has little to no impact on calls. The only example I can think of is if you've got a different color glove than the guy whose stick you are holding. Other than that, it doesn't effect anything.

My white shiny Mission gloves haven't gotten me any attention from refs...have from other players though. As I go to line up for a faceoff...I usually hear the "Nice mittens kid" or "Nice gloves"...dunno if it's sarcasm or not though

Maybe it does stand out i got pink tape for roller and i have 10 pim in 3 games lmao. One of the penaltys deffinitally was my fault tho a kid was showboating and i just layed him out.

Well, pink blade tape may make it just a hair easier to see when you've got your stick in someone's gut.

From a ref's perspective:

If I have a delayed penalty and can't see a number I look to find something about the player to remember so I can call the penalty on the right guy. Other than that I can't think of any reason why it would make a difference. One thing that I have seen at the youth level is the players who are more likely to give someone a cheap shot are the same ones who have "special" gear.

hehe so true. The ones with the all white gloves and pink sticks certainly stand out.

now that i have white gloves, i've been hit like crazy now... but nothing from refs... but it might be because i've had the same refs for about 4 years now
