Super Sharp Sharpenings

Recommended Posts

So today I bit the bullet and finally had my skates sharpened on a machine today after months of just using my redi-edgeice.com sharpener. There were some nicks that I just couldn't get out without hours and hours of manual labor. Anyway, the guy who sharpened my skates made them extremely sharp. I don't get it - how come sometimes they (same person) sharpen your skates and they are super sharp and sometimes they are just normal sharp?

If there is already a topic on this, sorry...

I think having an ultra sharp blade is the worst feeling. Whenever I get one it is such a struggle to stop, but at least I can turn very quick. Also it sucks when someone makes your outside edge slightly higher than the inside edge. That's the Skate Zone for ya.

After months of not having your skates sharpened, the new edge had to feel wicked sharp as compared to what you were skating on. Factor in the hardness of the ice at your rink and the hollow he gave you to the equation.

I don't think so. I know the difference between a new sharpening and a super sharp sharpening. I think the too-deep hollow is right. I used my tool this morning and was able to shave it down to a less shallow hollow. The tool is set to 3/8" so I know he made it deeper than that.

Imagine my suprise during warmups when I went behind the net, tried to stop like I normally do and went flying towards the ice....

you should always ask for a specific hollow.. that way your sharpenings are always consistent

what wiould make my blade really sharp as a hollow?

i need to get mine sharpened toinght and i want a new, very sharp hollow

Which SZ are you at?

There are a couple different things that it could be. He could have put a deeper hollow on your skates. Or, your hand sharpener might not have put as sharp an edge on your skates as the sharpening machine did. Since you have gone so long without a machine sharpening you became used to a less sharp edge and now the machined edge feels super sharp.

I agree, you hit it on the head. Hand sharpeners are at best less than adequate, unless of course you can move your hand at 3800rpm. So when one skates on a dull edge for a long time and finally gets a real sharpening, it ALWAYS feels too sharp.

one time i had a ton of nicks on my blades because one area in the rink didn't hat padding, so i ended up stepping on some concrete....long story short, when i went to get my skates sharpened the next time, instead of getting the ususal 7/16 i had to get 3/8 to get rid of all the nicks...

Getting a deeper hollow would not get the nicks out faster--it will actually take longer. You want to grind out the nicked edges, not grind out more hollow before you even get to the nicks...
