Helmet Repair or Helmet Recomm

Recommended Posts

Ok, noob on these boards. But here's my question. Well I'm using a Bauer/Cooper 3000 with a Itech HLC half shield. The padding in the helmet are getting hard and yellowed and a couple pieces have fallen out. I hot glued them once and it all fell back out after a couple games. Any suggestions on what to do or should I get a new helmet(tempted to since I got tax returns ) Don't want to spend a ton of money since I'm in college and playing in a semi-casual league. Saw a good deal on a Bauer 5000, but anyone had experience with trying to fit a Itech HLC shield on it? It's the one with the vents on top. I heard Jofa was good for ventilation, cept I couldn't find one...kinda phased out like Itech ones are.

I have a 5000 now and its outstanding.

Id get a new one since its for your brain and all. I cant see that the one you have now is preventing much harm.

You make the choice though. Seeing as your in college youd probably want to keep that head in good shape.

Get a new helmet. There are some good deals floating around right now and I could probably track down a 690 if you really want one.

If the helmet is compromised (any cracks in the plastic, pads are compressed and not resilient) then get a new one.

If not, get the right type of glue and repair them. Hotmelt is not the right stuff, it is brittle when cold.

You need some sort of silcone based RTV glue. There is stuff called "goop" or "shoe goop" at home depot. Just make sure everything is bone dry, and let it cure for 24 hours.

Think I'm leaning towards a new helmet. But I do want to get a good fit with my visor since I'm happy with it.

RBK 8K is the best helmet everrrrrrr (except maybe the new Mission, it looks sweet too). It is incredibly light, and very comfortable, even more than my 5000. Look on ebay for them I was able to buy one for $80 or so NIB. The 690 is a nice hlemet too. You definitely need a new helmet, once the padding gets hard, it doesn't cushion an impact nearly as well anymore.

I hope I'm not off topic, but how correct are those expiry dates on the bcak of helmets? For example, my 4000 says that it's done June next year which makes me think that I should get a new bucket soon. I assume that its because the foam eventually breaks down. Is there any other reason for this? Or do you think that Bauer puts an even short life on their helmets to make people buy new ones? Or is this a CSA/HECC requirement?

I had a 5000 (which I really liked) and just replaced it with an 8k (which is pretty sweet as well). Hockey Canada says you should replace your lid every 5 years as the foam starts to dry up and doesn't perform as well in an impact, hence the expiration date.

I'd go for the new Mission Intake helmet if I where you. I bought the Reebok 8K but dished out a lot of dough for it. I've heard the intake is very popular with a lot of the NHLers right now. It's also about half the price of the 8K. If you can't find the Intake go for a Bauer 5000.

Re expiry question - yes, it is a HECC requirement. It is really the certification which expires after 5 years not the helmet itself. The thinking at HECC is that standards are supposed to be reviewed every 5 years so it is their way to try to insure that players use equipment which is up to the latest standard.

Actual life of a helmet varies enormously from player to player, helmet to helmet, so many factors are involved: amount/frequency of usage, care and maintenance, abuse/punishment (e.g., impacts while playing and "other"), type of liner material - to name the main ones, I think...

Inspecting your lid regularly for signs of damage which could compromise protection or function is key. For some players and the way they play and take care of their gear, helmet might be pristine after 5 years. For another player, who is into head-butting, sweats like a horse, plays 9 times a week and whose helmet lives in a moist corner of his hockey bag the rest of the time...well, that one might not be in great shape after one season...
