this may sound naive but i dont think neckguards make a huge difference, if you get a butt-end in the troat it is gonna hurt weater you have a neckguard on or not, i guess it protects against cuts, but i find the diffrerent neckguards dont give a huge variation in protection, so i just go for the most comfortable

Get a nice, thick terrycloth headband. It's going to be as comfortable as anything you can find and a lot cheaper.

neckguards are there to protect you from cuts. if the pain you got is from soft tissue damage, like a bruise or something, a neckguard won't help. chadd's right, a headband would be better for that

There are several neck guards available with hard plastic inserts in them just like slash guards for your wrists, however they're extremely uncomfortable.

I have a base-layer turtle-neck style shirt with some (I think) Kevlar in the neck made by Jock plus, like this. It took a while to get used to, at first it felt like I was being strangled with it on, but now the only time I feel that way is when I am NOT wearing it.

Unfortunately, there is something in the material that makes this shirt reek after one or two wearings. This has never happened with any of the other moisture-wicking garments I've ever worn.

i just purchased a new set of 2 compression shirts to play in, so the shirts with a built in neck guard are not an option. i found them on hockey monkey, but if anyone in toronto knows where to find them, let me know. thanks
