Because he was knocked stupid. If I recall that game correctly, Kapanen struggled his way to the bench, reeled in by Philly players and the play continued into a Philly goal to win the game.

I am amazed that nobody on here has commented on this being a "high hit" with the stick up into the players face and head....Along with hits from behind, this is one of the most dangerous plays in hockey.

All I see in the comments was "what a great hit". That was an illegal hit!!!!

That type of hit has been a non call for years in the NHL...and unfortunately I have seen many many concussions as a result of these kinds of hits in both the NHL and in youth hockey. If Tucker had planted his shoulder..it would still have resulted in a massive hit, which probably would have winded Kapinen for several shifts..instead of risking making it a career ending head injury.

It is so important for the long term health of the game, as well as the individual player's health, that this type of hitting be policed...in spite of how "cool" fans may think it is. Hell even the NFL has rules about targeting a players head in many instances.

When parents watch this at youth games, they get so mad, they want the coaches to have their players retaliate in kind, and the cycle goes on....it must be policed from the top down....kids learning the game cannot think that hitting another player in this fashion is a "good thing". Other parents just figure if this is what the game is all about..better put my kid in a different sport.

When you are a parent and your son or daughter is carried off the rink with a concussion, and later when they have given up their face masks at age 18, a shattered orbital bone, your perspective on this kind of play will change...better that it happens before this.

Very thoughtful words of wisdom. I dont think anybody wants to see another player get injured. I have a 13 years old son myself, and i know how i feels when a kid is carried off the rink injured to the head, neck or back. It's a devestating feeling...

Alot of people claimed it was high when it first happened.

I just freeze framed it and he's on his feet until contact, his arms are down at his rib cage, and his stick is pointing up, but doesn't make contact with Kapanen. One of the things that makes it look high is Kapanen lowers himself, and Tucker powers up and into him. He makes contact with his shoulder, try checking it out in slow motion if you haven't.

Well "ugliness may well be in the eye of the beholder" too...when I freeze framed this it looks pretty clear to me that the left forearm/elbow of Tucker comes right up under the chin of Kapinen....no doubt something hit his head to cause that kind of reaction. It is not perfectly clear in my video due to the original resolution of the piece, but I did run it in stop frame about 10 times and although the stick appears to go up over the head of Kapinen, Tuckers left forearm appears to be in perfect position to drive up under Kapinen's chin. Kapinens head snaps back too which would indicate this sort of contact. There was no way to see that Tuckers left arm was "down", as it certainly wasn't in the frames just preceeding the contact. Plus at the finish of the hit, you see Tuckers forearm coming away from under the chin of Kapinen...while not "conclusive " due to the video quality, it does look pretty suspiciosly like a whole lot of "forearm shiver" hits that I have seen too many times.

You'll see whatever you want in that video, it's too hard to see anything clearly. From what I recall it was pretty clean, just really hard.

I see him tuck his fore-arm into his ribs, make contact with the shoulder and come through with his whole body. This includes the fore-arm at the end. If it's an illegal hit, every hard hit thrown in the NHL is.
