Protein shakes: Effects on hockey

Recommended Posts

How long does it take for your body to digest or fully take in protein?

it depends on what you're talking about. From micellar casein it takes 5-7 hours (it is in some protein powders, eggs, and unprocessed milk basically direct from the cow), from a food source like chicken, beef or something, it falls into normal digestion of your system, 1-3 hours, then there's whey isolate which absorbs in around 30 minutnes, and then whey hydroslate which absorbs into your bloodstream in a matter of minutnes.

Those "studies" are bollocks. They've done long term studies of intake of large amounts of protien, and nothing has come up. Maybe the occasional kidney or liver that was already damaged. But protein will do nothing in it's own right to hurt you.

I'm not a doctor BUT too much proteins can hurt you, it's gonna be really hard for your kidneys.

unless you are a doctor that have studied the effects of high protein diets,

your not really qualified to say what you claim.

lets not give any medical advice unless you are a doctor...

was i giving medical advice? i dont think so, i was just letting you guys know what my doctor told me... that there could be side effects, not necessarily common, but someone on this board, who reads this could be the guy it affects. may be they got a bad kidney.. or liver.. you just don't know.

so lets not dismiss suggestions, when the advice is to check with your doctor.

the doctors will tell you to "be safe" ... but seriously, when you're playing a game with a 100 mile per hour puck flying around, how much are those extra grams of protein going to hurt you.

Anyhow, all the research done with protein have pretty much been done with a bunch of guys with already existing kidney problems. Medical research sucks, but that's a topic for another day.

there's risk in everything you do, why risk more than you need to...

will you really be saying that.. when your waiting for a kidney transplant, cause you were the exception

i hope you can back this up...

if medical research sucks, what is that tylenol doing in your bathroom?

or the pepto bismol, for when you get food poisoning..

headache.. tylenol

bacterial infection.. penicillin

cut finger.. polysporin

i highly doubt you dont use these common products... all done with medical research...

i am not saying all medical research is 100% accurate, but it doesnt suck

I was talking more along the lines of more dangerous and less proven items. Crap that shouldn't be on the market like viagra, or one of those anti-depressants.

I'm saying that medical research sucks because the big drug companies that produce perscription drugs will usually find ways to make it seem like thier product is working, reguardless weather or not it actually is.

I usually don't need to use any of those items you mention because I get my excess protein intake! ;)

Protein is what your body uses to build muscles. Most people will drink it right before a workout because it will help them build better. Don't drink them if you aren't going to work out because it will turn pretty much directly to fat.

Taking protein shakes before or after hockey or any workout is totally useless. Protein builds muscles when the body is resting. When you workout, it takes about 5 days per muscles (except abs and smaller muscles) to fully regenerate their fibres. Taking protein supplements during those 4-5 days will help grow your muscles.

The human body cannot assimilate more than 30 grams of proteins per 3 hour periods.

If you wanna be faster, have more legs during a game, proteins like a steak will definatly not help. Carbohydrates (good sugars), like pastas will help.

dude what are you talking about, taking protein shakes obviously arent useless after a workout. They give you fast protein to your muscles at the time you need it most.

not to change the subject - but i have heard quite a few ppl say that if you drink protein shakes alot (like for years) that when you get older you are very likely to get kidney stones

only reason why i ask is because a guy i work with has had alot of kidney stones and he has been a weightlifter most of his life

has anyone else heard of this?

I have never heard of this correlation (protein shakes to kidney stones).

I do know that direct source protein (shakes, bars, etc) is horrible for kidneys. Direct source protein makes your kidneys work severe overtime. For the normal healthy person, it's not something that will kill you, but it isn't exactly healthy.

I've read many bodybuilders' diet and workout schedule, and you will notice they have shakes up to 4 times a day. That can't be good. Throw in whatever steroids they are doing, and they are just asking for small testicles and kidney failure. And when I say bodybuilders, I mean the pros like Dexter Jackson, Jay Cutler, Ronnie Coleman, etc. Not just gymrats and guidos that want to be big for their tight Tshirts at the club.
