It would be nice to see an Asian other than Richard Park make it to the NHL. I know of a Japanese goalie that is currently playing in the AHL and was drafted by the Kings, but his name escapes me now. If memory serves correct, he was scouted when Japan played in their qualifier several years ago. I hope he makes it.

Fukafuji (sp?). He plays for the Reading Royals in the ECHL, has been up and down from the AHL. He's a very solid minor league goalie, not sure if he'll ever make it up to the NHL, but where he's gotten says a lot already.

Seeing as how China is doing so well in international figure skating, where do those skaters practice? They must practice on a regulation size hockey rink. In my building(right outside metro NYC), the Asian population loves to ice skate; hockey, figure, and recreational. I keep warning the hockey coaches that someday these Asian hockey players are going to kick our butts!

Ya - Alot of good Asian players here in Toronto-- very fast and quick.

I'm from Hong Kong, cept lived in the US most my life. I was back in HK during Thanksgiving...there's an ice rink inside some mall I went to while I was there. I was actually surprised at seeing an ice rink period. Heheh, I was wondering what they use to resruface the ice too and they had a real Zamboni, unlike my rink where we got an Olympia, heh.

Alex Kim is Korean and he's currently playing with the Gulls. He rocks it out, 13 points in the last 3 games after 31 games missed due to a broken collarbone. Nice to see some other Filipino blood on this board. Wonder if the Philippine Olympic Committee would be interested in building a Philippine team to send to the Olympics in 2014...

And BTW I can't stop thinking about Yao Ming playing D for China...

Jim Pak - born in South Korea, I think - Stanley Cup Champion with the Penguins (the year Joe Mullen was on the team), played D.

Agreed! From the little that I know of him, he hasn't played elsewhere other than Japan before his AHL and ECHL stint. Amazing considering that the levels here in Asia are highly competitive but still a far cry from North America and Europe.

Paek.

Good guy. Knew him when he coached in Orlando. He is now an assistant with Grand Rapids (AHL)

Nick, are you based in Manila or the US?

From what I've gathered, SM has Ice hockey tied up with POC. With the ice hockey politics inside their malls with their coaches, students, and parents, I highly doubt we'll be able to field any kind of highly skilled team in 2014. It's a nice thought though. The best way to do it would be to get Filipino Americans and Filipino Canadians to fly in and represent, but that would take up slots of the locals. I doubt the SM coaches would allow this to happen. Sigh. I've tried to help out and have been unsuccessful.

And Yao Ming playing D for China is a scary, scary thought.

Filipino-Canadian by birth, born in Montreal. Lived in the US since I was 5.

There are enough ice players in P.I. to actually make a squad?

We can round up 4 Men's teams easily any time to form a league. 6 teams at best effort. We have the numbers to put up a team, but the skill level is an entirely different story. Only a number of us have had international experience. And the level we play locally is recreational at best when compared with North America and Europe.

Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan would be the countries with serious talent.

The best Filipino American and Filipino Canadian players we've had have all flown back to the US and to Canada due to the weak economy. When we had them in town, those were the days. We had the Captain of the Peewee team of the Dallas Stars before he had to come over with his family. That guy could do everything - skate, pass, score, dangle, etc. We had another great guy from Toronto who was the second best local player when he was in town. I played on the team with these 2 guys and we were able to win all the local tourneys we joined plus be competitive for the Asia (recreational) tournaments we'd fly out for. These 2 guys and a bunch of others are supposed to be saving up to make it home this Christmas and every Christmas there after to visit, play a lot of hockey, and party afterwards. Let me know if ever you fly into town. We'll hook you up with games, booze, etc. :D

Did Yao Ming Really play D for china ?

not to hijack thread but...

why are you guys out there?

No, but if he did, a 7'11" D-man would be something incredibly frightening.

I think you mean 7'5". Unless you're counting him with 6" skates on. Hell, I think the 6" skates would be scary enough.

LOL, shows how much I like basketball, eh?
