Washing gear

Recommended Posts

I usually take my gear to get cleaned, but right now I'm packing up to move and don't have the time to take it in and pick it up.

I know a lot of girls say that they just chuck their gear in the washing machine, add soap and go.

Do you know if it is safe? I have ultra sensative skin and use a special detergant. I know that I can use my roommate's but if I do should I send my gear through two cycles just to make sure all the soap is out?

The main pieces I need to send through are my elbow pads, shin pads and pants.

I've washed my shins, gloves and elbow pads covered in purple mold and all come out looking nice and new otehr than cuts in the fabric and other damage from playing. I see no problem with it and will continue to do so when they get unbearable, sometimes they feel a little stiff but just play with them once and theyre fine.

Mine aren't modly or anything, infact my stuff doesn't even really smell. It just smells...damp.

I mean, I air my stuff out in our main room (no one goes in there anyway) and it doesn't bother anyone. Even my underarmour gear can go usually 5 or 6 games/practices/bag skates before I have to wash it.

Sounds like you aren't working hard enough on the ice. :P

Sunlight and fresh air are the best thing for making sure your stuff doesn't reek.

Haha, no, it just the fact that I'm a girl and my stuff smells like...girl. Mainly deodrant, shampoo and body wash.

Hey guys, ever hear of it? ;)

Our team is full of hard workers. We only have a few players and if you don't work you get benched. And then you hear about it from the rest of the team.

Last game we had 4 defense 4 forwards and 2 centres. Yeah we worked our asses off.

I take my stuff to the laundymat every once in awhile and throw everything except my gloves in the Super Loader. Comes out just fine. I use low heat on the drier and then throw them on the porch when I get home.

On another note, we have some girls that play in our weekly pick-up that smell up the room. It can be a little odd when they join you in the shower though.

Be careful when using a home washer that has a center agitator, it can be abrasive your bulkier equipment e.g. pants. Set your cycle to gentle and keep an eye on things.

Better yet fill up your tub enough to cover the gear, add laundry soap, hand agitate then let it soak for an hour...agitate again...rinse very very well and dry outside in the sun or in the dryer on low heat for knits. Woolite is great for everything including gloves, it rinses out well.

well I just got back from class and I had thrown my shin pads and elbow pads in the machine.

No worse for wear. Though I did find out how much shiznit my machine can take before the belt breaks. Hahaha.

My pants are in now. All's looking bright and smelling good.

for gloves that stink just mix wintergreen rubbing alcohol and peroxide half and half in a spray bottle and spray the insides. I guess you could use it for the rest of your equipment if you wanted too ive only used it on my gloves tho.

I second the central agitator (top-loading washing machines, except the Maytag Neptune) comment. Not only does your gear get roughened by the agitator, but it just floats to the surface, and may not get as clean as a laundromat's front loader where your stuff gets truly tumbled. One reason why we bought a front loading washing machine when ours had to be replaced.

A buddy of mine takes his gear to the car wash, where he uses the high-pressure sprayer to blast everything. Frankly speaking, he either needs to do it more often or learn the concept of "soap".

From personal experience: NEVER use the high-temperature setting on the dryer for hockey gear. Plastic melts, and other materials shrink.
