How big do chest protectors go?

Recommended Posts

OK, so looking at sizing guides I see that chest protectors in the XL seem to be about 46-48 inch chests.

I am 6'3'', about 240 with a 38-40 waist and a 50 inch chest. What brand makes the biggest.

I am slowly putting together goalie equipment so I can try to learn the position. I am getting the skates within a week or two, but to be honest, I don't want to go into me LHS and start trying on gear then leave. Even though I do plan on getting it from them, these boards have me scared. The LHS guys are pretty decent, and I have bought most of my gear from them, but its going to be a while on the chest protector yet, so was wondering what is a good large fitting brand.

Also, do they make a lower priced model, that offers protection?

Thanks, and sorry for the stupid question, but I am sure I will post more as I get closer to picking up the different pieces

Two answers for you. Ultimately not the exact one you are looking for though...

Answer 1) Good and cheap. I've heard nothing but good things about the new Vaughn 3700 chest and arm. Cheap, it's $189 to $229 Canadian on eBay. Sizing is by height and arm span though, not chest size...

Vaughn sizing page.

Answer 2) If you need something bigger. You can go the custom route. Battram, Miller, Boddam, Jackson can all custom make a chest and arm to your specific needs... Pricey though. Probably run you $400 - $600 Canadian.

Something to consider anyways....Good Luck with your quest. :)

Thanks for the tips. I am not going to go custom. I am currently beginner level hockey player, and want to try beginner level goalie.

I e-mailed my LHS, and asked their advice, I will be getting my skates from them also, and have asked about a price for the whole package gear. I think they should be fine with me trying on gear when I am buying other gear. Just after reading the thread in what customers do, I like the guys at my LHS, but they don't know me from jack, so don't want to be pissing them off.

Vaughn do arms and height size, that sounds promising.

Thanks again

Well I tried on a teamates Vaugn 7000, and it fit short on me, it was a medium and I wear medium everything generally. Then I tried on his Brians ALite in a large and that fit me perfectly. So both of those brands seem to fit a bit smaller than the size indicates. Wound up buying the ALite off him cheap.

I was looking at the Itech 4.8...they seemed good enough for an entry level guy and they arn't too much money. I was recommended that by someone because you can extend the length. Someone also told me to look at the Rbk entry level one. Seemed decent to me.

And OT, so you wind up not going for those Tour F-14s? I recommend you going to goaliestore.com or goalieboards.com and scout out some equipment people are selling. I have found a couple good deals on used equipment that work well for noobs like me. There were a couple guys on these boards too that had stuff FS, I tacked up a posting on the site, you could do the same.

DR makes some nice C/A pads at various price points and I'm pretty sure the XL is going to be large enough for you.

OK, I am expecting a quote from the LHS today, at least he said he would get me a price by today, so I will ask him about it.

Webster, I play beginners hockey, and want to play goals now, will be beginner for a while I would think, so don't really want to go custom.

Hopefully I will get out to at least get my skates this weekend, as long as he knows I am going to buy from them, rather than try everything on and buy online, I should be fine to try some stuff on.

MSH has made me paranoid about trying on gear now :(

I too am in the future market of getting C/A's. I've been using a friend's set from time to time, and his C/A is an old Koho size L, it fits great except it's a bit short due to a bit of the 'dunlop' disease, and would like to find one that extends down farther. But I'm afraid if I go a size up, that the arms, if not everything else will be too big. How adjustable are the arm lengths, and how easy is it? I've never really examined any C/A's to figure it out myself. I'm 5-9, but have a bigger upper body, big shoulders, and an increased volume liquid grain storage facility lol. The level will only be a Beginners league, so I don't need anything Pro level. Any suggestions?

I have a DR, good movement and great durability, can't see any wear spots, or rips, protection, its not the best
