Norris - Lidstrom, McCabe had it after the first half

Does anyoen else think there needs to be an Offensive Defensman Award?

I mean, Yeah...McCabe was great offensively, but is he really good enough DEFENSIVELY to be called the Best Defenseman in the League.

I would propose that the Norris still go to the Best All Around D-man. (Offence/Defence combined). But give an second Award to the guy who excels Offensively. Maybe like an Art Ross for D-Men. It could go to the The Highest scoring based strictly on numbers (which means, in theory the same guy could win the Norris and this Award) or it could be subjective and be voted on.

I would also propose that it be called the Bobby Orr Award.

Well? Make sence?

I think there should actually be an award for the best defensive defenseman. It seems you have to put up good offensive numbers to be considered for the norris. Obviously if you put up numbers and are reliable in your own end you are a good all around guy. I feel sometime guys who have played real well on D, get over looked for nominations in favour of a more shaky guy just because they have greater offensive output.

Granted Lidstrom would tkae both this year, but how about rewarding the guys who just own their zone.

Hart-Thornton(Considering he made Cheechoo and 50+ goals scorer)

Adams- Laviolette

Selke- Rod Brind'Amour

Norris- Lidstrom

Vezina- Kipper

Lady Bing- Martin St-Louis

Calder- Sidney Crosby (not to taking anything away from AO, but considering he played pro in Russia last year, plus it was during the lock-out, so it was pretty much the same as playing in the NHL, I would say he was not at the same level as Crosby coming into this year(AO had quite an edge over Crosby). So to me, 100 points at 18 years old is more impressive than what AO did.

Maybe not totally relevant...but....in AO's third partial season with Moscow Dynamo(Russian Elite league "Pro"), he tallied 13 goals and 10 assists...... as an 18 year old in 53 games.....

Considering that AO had already 4 partial seasons playing in a serious professional league prior to coming to the NHL, his NHL "rookie" comparisons to Crosby's accomplishments right out of Junior, may be a little misleading.

When Gretzky came to the NHL, his stats were not considered those of a "rookie" because of his time already spent in the WHA....

Ovechkin's reputation as an 18 year old in the World Junior's was certainly at least as "bad" as Crosby's when whining is considered...

Should all this be factored into the Calder evaluation????

I don't like the idea of an automatic award for offensive numbers or the idea of giving an award of any type to a one-dimensional player.

Then I guess you're against the Richard and Ross trophies.

Sid has definitely been making his case down the stretch. I think the voting will be closer than it would have been a month ago.

My vote goes to Sid but we could see one of the tightest races in the history of the Calder trophy.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Bobby Orr award for the defenseman with the most points/offensive defenseman. Kinda like the Art Ross for defense, I guess. Then again you'll end up with the same defensman getting both. A lot of times there's the guy that plays night in and night out against the top forwards, chips in a few points here and there and gets no recognition.
