Replacing Runners on Lightspeed Tuuks

Recommended Posts

I recently aquired a few boxes of pro stock skates in various states of dissarray. A few pairs have Lightspeeds mounted to the boot but no steel runners. I also have some sets of complete holders with runners that are not mounted to anything.

I'm TRYING to take the steel from those unmounted runners and install them on the skates but running into issues.

First off, it IS the correct size steel because I'm taking them from the same sized holders (size "288" for example). I hook the front of the steel int the groove and then line up in mounting screw in the back and force it down and it with pressure... It doesn't seem to want to go in quite all the way. I've tried getting the hex bolt on the inside of the holder to catch with the long tool so I can start threading it through to see if that might PULL the blade into alignment, but it won't start threading.

So... What am I doing wrong? Is there any defective holder or steel known issues that I should be aware of? Any tricks that you shop guys wouldn't mind sharing?

How the hell did you guys replace the runners from standard TUUKs without taking off the whole holder?

I'm sure these questions have been answered previously in multiple threads but I'm having a damned time finding them... Please go easy on me. Thank you so much!

I believe that it's the old holder you are trying to do it with. You may need the old allen head female part. The hex I think only works for the newer lightspeeds. You may need to turn the boot upside down. Also make sure that the hole is clear and that the threads aren't stripped. Other than that try and go buy some new $.50 parts from you LHS and attempt again. Make sure you try both old and new style Lightspeed female and male parts.

If you are putting LS steel into a LS holder of the same size, it will fit, you just have to put a little muscle into it. Place the front hook into the front of the tuuk like normal and push the other end as far into the tuuk as you can. Now turn the skate so it is toe down and as you grab and squeeze the nut end, knock that toe onto a table. Keep squeezing and hopefully it'll go. Otherwise you can take a plastic dead blow mallet and use it to apply some 'persuasive' force. It just takes some trial and error to get the steels in but they will fit.

In addition to what the others have said, the allen nut must be aligned perfectly with the threads or it wont start. I use hot glue to attach nut to allen wrench so it don't fall off, that way you can go straight down into the hole

Awesome, thanks for the ideas, I think I can make it work.

How do you attach TUUK+ style steel? Do you have to unmount the holder? I was looking at those bolts with nuts and it'd be hard enought taking out the heel bolt with a special too but damn near impossible to take out the front bolt.

BTW, whats the different, if any, between the TUUK+ and the TUUK Custom+?

You have to get a swivel attachment for your socket wrench. Even with that tool its a little tricky but it can be done.

the the tuuk custom+ holder its easier too unmount the holder to put the blades on, as for the lightspeeds if you have a rubber mallet just use that to wack the blade in

the newer skates with tuuk+ have holes in the sole of the skate to enable you to get at the bolts easier. i've done it with my 5000s three times

i have the tuuk wrench for sale in this thread

I have a little magnet from Sears that is magnetizes screwdrivers (probably less than $5). You just slide the screwdriver through the center an "Walla" a magnetic screwdriver. I'm going to try throwing my socket through it today or tomorrow to put my steel back on. I'll let you know how it works...should be alot less messy than the hot glue.

Well, I used the tricks you guys mentioned: Rubber mallet and hot glue and it worked for all but one of the pairs (Supreme 8000's, its being a real bitch). The hot glue is NOT messy at all, you just apply a small amount near where the nut and the tool meet and it really does the trick... AND the glue sticks to the tool so there's no residue on the nut. Really cool.

jrhky36, I PM'd about the wrench.

Thanks, guys
