Just thought I'd throw this out there. In the 2nd inning today against the Oakland Athletics, Barry Bonds hit homerun number 714 to tie him for 2nd place all-time.

I felt a bit bludgeoned with all the hoopla. I understand The Babe is an icon, but he was number two. To have a six-week watch was a bit much.

It's a shame that Bonds has tainted his own legacy. Without any additives, he was on pace to hit 500 homers anyway, making him the only player with 500 homers and 500 steals.

I agree that "on pace" doesn't mean much when you are 300 homers shy of 500, but Bonds had 445 homers and 460 stolen bases through the '98 season, when it is assumed that he began to take steroids.

Given he was 34 at that time and had averaged 34 homers and 35 SB's a season, and given we know he was willing to exercise, I think it's safe to assume he would have reached 500 of each if he just had been a milk and carrots gym rat. As I said, he ruined his legacy because no one in history had that combination of power and speed.

Instead, most of no longer care because we don't know how many of the home runs since 1998 are due to the steroids.
