Staying in the thread, I am also in the market for a new computer. (notebook or desktop) What would be the best one to get for playing some games, going on the internet, downloading music? Thanks.

That sounds like a mac to me :). Thanks to the x86 Intel processor, it is possible to install windows (in tandem with OS X) on a mac. I would suggest a Macbook Pro. It has a great video card in it, and a great dual core processor (which newer games will take advantage of). The great thing about Dual Booting is, you choose what operating system you want to boot into when you turn your computer on, you can boot into Windows or OS X. When you want to game, you can go into windows, when you want to do anything else, boot right into OS X.

yeah, vista, okay... they announced it, what 3 years ago? They announced many great features ( a lot of them were copies of what is already avalible today in tiger) and to date they have taken 5 of those features away, and there "release date" has been pushed back 4 times, it is 9 months away as we speak... dont be too excited

I would suggest a Macbook Pro.

Do you have one ? I have a Macbook Pro (15 or 17 inch, can't remember). This is my first Mac. Normally I use PC clones and run Linux. In many ways it is a beautiful computer. But beware of this: if you plan to use it as anything BUT a desktop replacement, you will be dissatisfied. This thing runs so hot it is ridiculous. You can burn bare skin if you have the thing on your lap and are wearing shorts, and is still searing through jeans. This means that you can forget about using it comfortably on a train, at the bus station, or on your sofa. As a laptop computer, it sucks.

I think it is stupid that any computer maker would make a laptop computer run so hot, but if you look on their website Apple never calls it a laptop or notebook, they call it a "portable computer". Their instructions specifically say that the computer should ONLY be used on a flat surface, and not be placed on e.g. laps, pillows, etc. If it were my money to spend, I would wait until they develop cooler running Macbooks. So you are warned.

My Macbook also sufers from the documented problem of generating a high pitched whine which only goes away when you run the Photobooth application (it comes back when you quit the application).

you dont remember what size you have? Are you sure you have one buddy?

Yes kid, I am sure I have one. Do you ? And if not, what are you basing your recommendation on ? I didn't pay attention to the model nor the screen size because I didn't pay for it, I had my office pay for it. It is whatever the top of the line was about 6 weeks ago, I know they have introduced other models since then. At the time I ordered I think there was only one screen size anyways and two or three configuration options.

I would think after over a month of using it, you would figure out what size it is. I currently have a powerbook which is the powerpc version of the macbook pro. I have put in an order for a MacBook and should be recieving it in 2-3 days.

I am basing my recomendation off of my knowledge of mac notebooks. I have worked with the macbook pro for a short period of time. My buddy had one, and I wanted to try it out and run some programs to see how it ran. It didnt run as hot as some people have been reporting, but I really wasnt doing anything too intensive.

This is the first run of a new computer line, problems happean. They will be fixed out in the next run (hopefully). As we have said before, do not buy bleeding edge technology.

With all due respect, I dont think you have a macbook pro. You dont know what size monitor you have? Give me a break. I could see if you werent technically inclided and didnt know what processor you have or how much ram. But you dont know what the size of the monitor is you are staring at every day? You say you are running linux which isnt exactly a beginners os. You can memorize linux commands, but you cant ballpark a screen size?

Also what kind of business are you in where you are running macs?

I can't believe anyone would accuse someone of lying about owning a computer - why would I do that ? So I could post in this forum and argue with the likes of you ?

Anyways - here is a picture of my computer on my very messy desk. You can figure out how big it is if you want to - I could not care less. My knowledge of Linux is irrelevant to whether I should give a **** about how big my monitor is - like I wrote before, there were no options and I didn't care how much it cost, so the screen size was irrelevant since this was all I could get.

So here it is: enjoy. Click the image if you want a larger image to measure. I am done with trying to prove I own this computer.

p.s. I don't know why my line of work is relevant, but if you must know I work in biotech research doing computational biology, where all of my work is done on various Unix platforms.

LOL... ive been called a moron many times before, so I really cannot accept this as proof.

I mean I think we all know that you got a friend to do this, this isnt actually your notebook ;)

That is obviously a 15" notebook, you can tell just by looking at it.

The machine runs hot, yes. It is a first run notebook, problems sometimes do occur. I suggested a macbook pro because they are great notebooks. They are very powerfull, and some people, at this time, are experiencing heat problems. I have said in the past do not buy the first run of anything when it is new. I will still suggest the computer to anybody who wants a powerfull notebook... just wait a month or two...

Do you think the problems would be worked out when school starts up again in late August, early September? Thats when I plan to buy a computer.

don't worry if possible, vapor would make love to his macs if they added that feature.

i like mac notebooks, no doubt, but I still see it as a computer for graphics and job based programs which mac is exceptional. however, for fun, i prefer PCs

Hate to bump such an old topic but as graduation nears my parents told me to start looking and deciding on what laptop--notebook I want for my present. Usually I do very little gaming but as I have more time that might increase, I definately need the internet and I'm on AIM and download/upload music. The kicker is, what computer is going to be good for going to say a tech school where I'm going to have to save and perform a lot of work both with words and with programs. Would custom be the way to go or is there something out there that would be good for me? Any help is appreciated, as I have a fair amount of time before graduation and all that good stuff, my parents want to order it in the next few weeks. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

get a macbook pro, its perfect for what you need

I hate my Macbook pro. Hibernation ("Safe sleep") is utterly untrustworthy on the thing and I have lost important work on it because it ran itself dead but did not hibernate.

It also runs hotter than any laptop I've ever used. Mine will burn bare skin. Apple will tell you not to use it on your lap. They will tell you it is not designed as a laptop, but as a "portable computer".

I've had to get a replacement battery (which did not fix my hibernation problems) and a replacement MagSafe adaptor (because the pins jammed and looks like they started to spark up in their housing as there are burn marks there).

Last I checked, people call them notebooks now.

And fyi, all laptops get hot.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with gaming. A "gaming notebook" will either have just enough to play some current gen games (and it will ruin your keyboard lick-a-d-spit). If you invest in a gaming notebook that is like a desktop replacement, have fun lugging it around... because it will probably weigh as much as a desktop.

IMO, games are for desktops and work/school is for the notebook.
