Deadening the Composite blade

Recommended Posts

My composite stick has a wicked shot, but i find receiving passes and stick handling seems a little more difficult that with my wood stick (easton synergy). I did some reading and foung that this is a somewhat common problem, so I was thinking about taping my stick in a different way.

One way i was thinking is you use the foam underwrap that you would use on your ankles to wrap the blade and then follow it up with regular cloth tape.

Another way was to buy foam tape 1/32" thick and tape the blade followed by cloth tape.

Anybody have any comments?

I would have to think that if you used any kind of foam or foam tape that it would dramaticly decrease your shots.

I think i know what you mean, but couldn't you just put a couple horizontal strips of tape on your blade before taping up in the usual way?

tried that, still to lively. i would probably have to triple wrap it, and this blade eats through tape as is, so i was just looking for alternatives.

when this is done (broken) i think i might just buy a shaft and some wood blades.

try a piece of duct tape or some clear poly tape

Or glue a piece of a bike tube or something.

i had that same problem a few months back. just spend some time on your stick handling and passing/receiving. it will feel good after a while.

I would go with a couple extra strips of tape. When I got my first composite stick, I put two layers of tape on the blade. Each time I retaped my stick I would use a little less tape until I was back to the way I normally tape my sticks. When your current stick breaks, or you decide to get a new one, look at the TPS Adrenaline or a Mission Pulse. Those sticks has some sort of insert that helps deaden the blade.

Maybe try some roller hockey blade patchs under hockey tape. Bauer used to make some called Opto tape, there's also Torpedo tape from Sonic and Power Patch. These are just thin self adhesive rubbery blade shaped patches.

try cradling the puck when receieving a pass that will work because adding more tape and foam would not help your shot at all itd probably make it worse.

We're not saying you have stone hands or anything like that. It's just that it takes a while to get used to these blades. During pregame warmups or during practices or shinny even, just take a buddy and work on passing. At home, you could get one of those smart-hockey balls to work on puck handling. It it's soft hands, try using a golf ball because it forces you to develop soft hands, else the bounce will make you loose the ball.

I work on my hands all the time. It's all about feeling the puck and recieving passes, it's also good for knocking pucks down.

What i do is take a street hockey ball and puckhandle, then hacky sack it(bounce it on my stick blade), then I catch it on the blade. It's a lot harder to catch and balance a ball on the blade of your stick than to recieve a pass... but trust me it will help with you accepting the pass.

It also impresses the ladies :P
