Prep Schools

Recommended Posts

I've been searching through the forum, read a few threads about prep schools previously, and have done a bunch of reasearching a few in New England, and Ontario. I want to get your guys' opinions which have the best hockey program? I know i'm probably better off going down to the states, around New England because they have the best schools, but i want some other opinions. I've talked to a few coaches already... I've been in contact with the Portsmouth Abbey coach from Rhode Island, aswell as the St. George's School in RI, and St. Andrews in Ontario.

I know a few of you've been to prep schools, and are currently attending, if you could give me info on the lifestyle, hockey, anything like that would be great, even feel free to PM me your experiences there. I'm looking to go for my senior year, which is not next season, but the season after that. To get the best for hockey and financial wide, a few told me i'd probably have to repeat a grade, so i go in as 11 when i should be 12, then 12 when i should go to College/University.. i think thats right. Anyways any info on applying, lifestyle, hockey, etc... you guys can give, would be great! Thanks a ton!

Edit: Sherwood, still awaiting your PM :P Lol, take your time bud.

If your willing to go to Saskatchewan, I know some kids who go to Notre Dame and that is good hockey, very good development program, but very disciplined, structured lifestyle.

Shattuck isn't even a true prep school in the literal sense of everything. its pretty much puck, puck, puck. their SAT's are a joke, and from what i understand (one of my buddies goes there), academics are secondary. lots of schools are like that, more or less focused on athletics instead of schooling. that's why you have to be selective. and nearly every school is around the 30-40 k range, if you can't afford one its not likely you will be heading to others.

Good point. From what I hear you're right; They're main focus is on their sports(hockey for the most part).

Some other schools outside of new england that are very good are Northwood, NSA, and Upper Canada College. UCC is one of the best high schools in the world, so is top notch academically.

As far as cost, if you have a talented hockey player with good grades, the school will likely be happy to give you need based financial aid.

One of the guys on my team sent his daughter to NSA for a couple years.

I have been to a number of prep school games, and although I do not really get why--there are always a ton of D1 college and NHL scouts there when the top teams play. I would say at least double what I see routinely at the EJHL junior games (the best junior league in new england).

I personally think that you get faster hockey and better conditioning/coaching playing juniors, but at least for this past season the scouts do not agree.

I do not know them well enough to recommend a specific school, but there are top ones that get all the attention, and there are others that get no attention, so pick carefully.

I think at the local D1 college level, the coaches just think that the prep hockey players have a better chance at getting thru the college academics, and do not think the level of play is that much different from juniors.

Yeah I am pretty sure that's the school. I will be a freshman next year. I am going to DePaul Catholic next year and was only looking at prep school for junior or later. This way I have time to develop, get tapes, coaches recomendations and everything. Please share anyhting you have.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't Lecavilier(SP) and a good number of current NHLer's ex-Hounds?

Uh huh, and if you look at a lot of the AHL and USHL and other leagues, there are a shocking number of quality players from that school.

whbd18, of that huge list there are maybe 15 good D1 and no D2 prep schools that are great for hockey. If you are going to spend $130K on a high school for the hockey, it had better be REALLY GOOD with a lot of SCOUTS watching!

If you're going to play hockey for your high school years it won't cost $130k. If they want you to play they won't hesitate to pay.
