I would go with an IBM Thinkpad (Lenovo). They are very well made, and come packed with features. They are the best made laptops out there.

I think the joke has gone on long enough. I dont want anybody to get the idea what I swing both ways. GET AN APPLE MACBOOK. There is no question about what to get, it should be a macbook. They are the PERFECT college notebook. The have the blazing fast core duo 2.0 ghz intel processor, are the perfect size for portablity and usablity. Since they use an intel chip you can ALSO run windows on the machine. You can run both OSX and Windows either at the same time or boot each individually. They come standard with 802.11G WIFI and Bluetooth. The display is just beautiful. The only thing I would suggest you do is upgrade your RAM to at least 1GB (if it is in your price range to max it out at 2GB, i would recomend that)

I am currently using a black macbook with 2GB on ram and I could not be happier. This runs much faster then my G4 Powerbook I had before I upgraded. A Macbook is the perfet student notebook

i have a Dell laptop, they're relatively cheap and well made. plus, they have great customer service and warrantee, so in that respect, i would recommend them for students. also, considering i'm not too hot with computers, the fact that i don't have to extra stuff to run windows is a bonus lol.

Dell's are also very unpretentious, unlike some other laptops....

The Macbook is ok for around 1.2k I guess but at over 5 lbs it's awfully heavy for what is supposed to be a more portable notebook. If I were you I'd take a hard look at a "convertible" or "tablet." Especially since you'll be using it for school.

Tablets are dead, they are getting little support from the mfgs and Microsoft alike...

most laptops are over 5lbs...

sub five pounds is whats called an ULTRA portable. It weight 5.2 pounds, so it is plenty portable.

And to say dell has good suppot is like saying a Semi could outhandel a Carrera GT...

My point is that a notebook that small should be lighter. The thing weighs barely a few ounces less then a 15" macbook pro. If it were closer to 4 lbs I'd have one right now but since it's pretty much the same weight there's no point in saving the extra $300 for a smaller and slower one.

an extra two inches can be tough. They have better batter life... and are smaller. I would rather have something smaller and a pound heavier than bigger and lighter. You cant tell the difference between a pound, but size can be annoying

I've worked, or consulted, for more than three dozen different organizations and the best laptops over that time were Toshibas. They simply have fewer hardware problems than any other brand that I've ever worked with, and that includes all of the big names.

This past year I went away to school and looked at all different laptops before I left. I finally settled on a Toshiba and it is absolutely amazing. Very fast, not too big and bulky and really anything under 6 pounds can be carried easily in a backpack, you dont even realize its on you. The only problem Ive had so far is the F7 key gets stuck when you push it down but thats strictly my fault, spilling and stuff around it. My roommate and a bunch of friends this year had dells and they just seemed bulky and a lot slower. I recommend going to a Best Buy or circuit city or whatever and just looking at whats available now and then hop on a website like epinions.com and search the make and model and read the reviews. Ive had no experience with macs so if you want to look into those as well go for it. Overall Id say give Toshiba a long hard look cause both my friend and I got them before the school year and have had absolutely no serious problems and I can easily see using this computer for all of school and a few years after that.
