Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2006 Hey guys, Its just been decided that I will be making my much elated trip to NY finally this Dec. As well as seeing all the touristy shite (Statue of Liberty, Chrysler bldg etc.) I plan on getting some great deals on gear (things like stick heads and maybe even an OPS, my 1st if cheap enough). What are the best places to go to get gear in Metro NY or Brooklyn?I will of course be seeing a NHL game and at least one College game as well. Rangers games are abit expensive (as I will be buying a top seat as soon as the new schedule is released) so I was thinking maybe a Devils game or Islanders game (would prefer to see NJ). I would like to know how easy it is to get to the Continental Airlines Arena if Im staying in Manhatten or Brooklyn? Also am I best to buy tickets straight off NJ's website or elsewhere? Ottawa is in the books at this stage as a "Maybe" to visit. My GF has some family friends there so we maybe able to mooch some accom off of them at one stage or another. Am I better to buy my stuff in Ottawa V's NY? If so where are the best places to go?Local knowledge would be bloody great help to me as coming from Aus I have no idea how high I can aim for on my coming up trip. Langenbrunner15 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2006 The one in NYC and Southern NY just suck except for if you go to like Nyack or Monsey, NY.
devilsrule711 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2006 I was just going to suggest the Ice House (since i work there) but i think it might be too out of the way for Joe but its up to himand the shop in Monsey is called NHl (New Hockey Limited) which is a small little shop they never get anything big or really high end in also at the rink in Monsey Sport-o-rama there will be a new shop called Cutting Edge in it they may be promising. i have no nfo on it yet since its still under constructionbut overall, Aussie Joe, around here adn out of those three, the shop at the Ice House is by far the best buts its like 30 min into Jersey if you're up for it
Jim A 4 Report post Posted June 19, 2006 for service you really are best off renting a car for the day or working out the public transit stuff to get to the Ice House and the pro shop...I was fitted for gear by each of them long before I knew them personally and was treated well regardless..go to an NYR game..what you get for a $65 ticket is much better than the NJD for the most part...find something in the 200's or even first few rows of the 3-- and it's a good view..middle of the ice..high rows in the 200 or low one in the 3's are my favorite spots in the garden... landofvanilla 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2006 In new york city, don't expect much. Wonderland sports is probably the best stop with two locations.. one at the sky rink at Chelsea Piers (23rd street in manhattan) and its other store in brooklyn, corner of 11th ave. & 63rd street I believe. The brooklyn location is mostly devoid of customers, but its selection isn't bad. Actually I'd imagine pretty bad compared to some of the LHS in Canada. Langenbrunner15 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2006 How is the one in Chelsea Piers...?
landofvanilla 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2006 Hven't been to that one but everyone tellls me expensive as hell. Edit: I just stopped by the brooklyn shop again. They do have a nice selection, they just got a huge easton order in. Still, the atmosphere is dead. Never been there around 3-5pm though, when school lets out. #28tz 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2006 I went to the one in Chelsea Piers when i came over from the UK but i can't comment on how cheap it was because any US store i go into will be cheap for someone who lives in the UK :o
Thockey17 1 Report post Posted June 20, 2006 Go to Paragon. The selection isnt all that bad. You will probably find some deals now that its technically the "off season" if you're lucky. They have be known to mess up pricing on multiple occaisons.I picked up a couple Z-bubbles last year for $10 each.

DamnLocust 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2006 Wonderland at chelsea Piers is tiny. For the size of the place, they cram a ton of stuff in there, but it's still not a great selection. I haven't been to the Brooklyn location, but I was told that they have anything and everything. Prices are a little higher than the smaller shops in the city, but Not completely unreasonable. Sports Plus on Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood is where I usuall ygo, with a pretty hearty selection, especially OPS. There are 2 more Sports Pluses in long island too. Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2006 Fantastic stuff guys. I will have to keep tabs on this thread and get down all the info I can. Im with #28tz, in that most prices in the US retail avg or not will be head over heels better then the stuff here in Aus. I guess but coming over I really want to visit a store with the best selection etc to make sure Im not leaving myself out of any sweet deals on close outs to new releases. In terms of seeing an NHL game Im considering NJ (website states cheaper tix), but obviously if MSG is closer to where Im staying (not sure on where that is as yet) I will be leaning towards that. It could be my one and only trip to the US/Canada, so I will be springing for a top seat no matter where I catch a game. Obviously a NHL game is what I want to see, but I've also heard college and minor league games are worth a look as well. Where in NY Metro should I goto see them?PS: We drive on the Left side here in Aus like the UK, thus hiring a car and driving on the right side scares the shite-ball out of me! ;-) I did it in Germany when I was there in 04, a few near accidents occured and I promptly handed the reins over to Dad.
