Skating without socks

Recommended Posts

Well I just started skating without socks maybe a month ago, I've played in 6 games (I'm in 2 adult leagues) and I will not switch back to socks any time soon. Anyhow, I smelled my boot today and it almost knocked me out.. wheww, I always take my skates and air them out but hot damn it smells like foot funk.. and I have ccm pro-tacks that supposedly have the H20 Control foot bed and anti-microbial liner.. what do you guys use to get rid of this smell? I was thinking throwing some odor-eater balls in the skates, or getting some spray at foot locker or something.. any suggestions?

well I know a lot of ppl that do it but I always opted for the thin whicking socks, however for a game about a month ago, I opened my bag and realized I forgot to pack my socks, and seeing as I was wearing sandals to the rink, I had no other option.. but then I ended up loving it, and havn't worn socks while skating ever since. I'll look into that funk-free stuff, thanks!

i don't know how to describe skating without socks other then you seem to get a better "feel" for the skate. Whatever little cushion the sock fabric gives you is gone. Somepeople say its all mental, but once I started skating with no socks, i'll never go back.

As far as the skate smelling, it smells cuz crap is growing in there. If you dry the skate out, it wont smell as bad.

Using a thin sanitary sock is a great compromise. It doesn't alter the feel ans helps prevent growth and funk.

same thing as other equipment, use an antibacterial spray. You might want to wash it out if you think you might get an allergic reaction to the spray.

Heard about this stuff but never tried it: Funk Free

I have a bottle of this stuff and it works wonders on skate and any other piece of equipments to get rid of the smell.

I've been skating without socks for over 10 years now and would never go back to socks. I used to get blisters wearing socks and I've tried many kinds that were said to be blister proof to no avail. The only thing that worked was going sockless. My skates smell really bad but I couldn't care less as it doesn't do anything bad to my feet but I may be tempted to try that funfree stuff anyways on my gear.. but just to please my wife who finds my gear smells all the way up to the main floor when I hang my gear in my workshop in the basement

I like skating with no socks as well. I find that spraying Febreeze into the boot after I've let the boot dry gets rid of about 90% of the smell. I usually give the rest of my equipment a once-over with Febreeze while I'm at it.

So are you saying that the rest of your equipment smells like roses...and just because you skated barefoot a few times you skates are STARTING to smell?

Hockey gear smells. There is really no way around it. I air out my stuff immediately when I get home (in the garage) and it stays "laid out" until it is time to skate again. I wash what I can (jerseys, jock, shirts, etc.) but it still smells.

I just deal with it... :(

Go to the drug store, buy a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide and a bottle of Wintergreen Rubbing Alcohol (it's green), mix them in a spray bottle, and spray on liberally. Let your skates (and other equipment) dry out, the smell will be gone.

I can't do it. I get blisters on the inside of my heel, kind of 45 degrees from the back, unless I wear socks.

Too bad, it feels good until that happens :(

Are the sani-socks and thin socks you all are referring to thinner than plain old dress socks? I know it would look pretty "geeky", but dress socks are very thin and alot cheaper than any of the thin hockey socks.

Yup, no socks for me. I posted a poll recently in the roller hockey part of the message board, and I'm curious as to how many people go without socks in their skates.

Yeah, and the smell is a killer, isn't it? Hockey gear stinks, period. But my skates are knockout smelly- I think the insoles could kill small animals

:D

Probably means your skate is too big as it is allowing your heel to lift

You might be able to skate a few time to just short of the blister-this will toughen your skin and build a callous where it bothers you

I suppose. Although my first pair (Vapor VII, now wearing Vapor XIX) was fitted too short (curling up toes to get into the skate) and I still had the blisters in those if I skated barefoot.

Oh well. Rumor has it if I skate enough times a week the skates will self-destruct and then I can look at different brands ;) :P

For now it's fine if I wear socks...
