we all knew it was going to happen... it's not a sad day for the wings, it's a sad day for hockey; a real class act.

Having moved to Michigan and becoming a Wings fan in '86, this is a tough day for me. I have never known the Wings without #19. I think Lidstom is the logical choice as the next Capt..

On a separate note, I am a bit miffed at Shanahan right now. The guy was all about taking a pay cut last year (because he was going nowhere after the crappy '03-04 season) to stay a Wing. He said he wanted to retire a Wing for God's sake! Now he has a good year and he wants to test the market. F@#K him!!!

My idol is gone .... and its hard to replace a guy like im,on and off the ice.

Sadly the wings did not come to the bell center this year so i did not had a chance to see im live one last time :(.

I have been wearing his number for the past 16 years.I think i will retire his number too.(there goes my number 19 on my MIA gloves....)

Who's the new captain? Lidstrom?

most likely. and after him most likely zetterberg.

just think about how good steve could have been with out all the injuries. but if he had had no injuries would he have been the same player he was?it is a shame he retired so close to 700, but he made the right choice. the last of a dying bread of player loyal to one team for their whole career, something we will never see again. thank you steve for the memories.

Stevie Y retiring doesn't change the fact I have always preferred Sakic and the Avalanche but you have to respect what he has done for the game, franchise and country he has served so greatly. A huge loss for the game, hopefully he finds his way into the front office once the time is right.

Great guy. Sad to see his career end. Everyone knew it was coming though. Thanks for the memories STEVIE. I think i'll watch the falling down behind the back pass highlight one last time.

Why does everyone think Zetterberg should be the captain as of right now? I've heard this from so many different people. He is young and has only played three NHL seasons. Just because he is young and good doesn't mean he should be the captain. It worked with Stevie, but that was a completely different team make up. Detroit has so many vets on the team that will most likely continue to play there for a while. Obviously guys like Chelios and Shanny will be gone by the time Lidstrom is, but there is a good chance Maltby, Draper, and Holmstrom will still be there. There will probably be some older UFAs on the team by then, too. If McCarty was still on the team I'd think that he would be a good choice. Being captain isn't about being the best on the team.

I'd imagine McCarty has alot of heart, when it gets deep in the play-offs, and they're down in the serious, he'd fight and do w/e to get his team momentum and to get his team back in it.

I think people are talking Zetterberg because he appears to be the guy the team is building around for the future and will try to make their franchise player.

Draper- Not as long as Lidstrom is there.

Holmstrom- Nope, role player that does not carry any weight in the locker room.

Maltby- NEVER. 3-4th liner who is becoming more and more of a burden to the team. No guts. I have never seen anybody start more shit and then skate away when the other guy wants to have a go. I wish they would get rid of him while he still might be worth something more than a 5th round trade.

It's really weird watching the flashbacks and hearing he was almost traded and considered a 1-way player a few years ago.

He was one of the guys who I didn't expect to retire, and didn't really want to. He wasn't the old Yzerman, but I still thought he served a purpose on the Wings.
