Is it new helmet time?

Ive had my bauer HH5000 (epuck edition :lol: ) for almost a year now and during my game last night, my head hurt like crap. I knew it was the helmet, and when I adjusted it it felt beter, but then my head hurt again. the gel is getting all hard and i have about an inch long crack in the foam, and on the outside I have a huge chunk of helmet that was like riped off (like from a puck or cement or a big hit or something). I use a size L. What do u guys think?

What do mean by "hurt"? Did it feel like your helmet was too tight? I suggest that if your helmet is beatup that you replace it. You don't want to take any chances with your head.

ya like it squeezes the sides of my head, and when i adjust it it still hurts. the gel is hard and i think it hurts my head because its as hard as rock

That problably means you shouldnt be using a 5000, the helmet doesnt fit properly if it gives you pressure points at certain parts of your skull. Plus if you have cracks in the foam, its time for a new helmet anyways. I used an old 5000 before they changed the shape slightly and Im having no problems using the Itech h100.

Go try on a CCM 1052 Tacks helmet. I recently got one and it is awesome. In my opinion, it has the best lining in the industry and the fit is unmatched.

You may have simply outgrown your helmet, literally. All the other signs of wear and tear alone say it's new helmet time. Go with whatever fits you best, and take your time trying them on, or you might end up with more headaches.

yah i might end up getting a nike quest, 1 because they are so cheap now (59.99) and ive heard they are very comfy. im gonna try some helmets on though

5000's are a very narrow helmet. In fact, it's the only one that fits me half decent. It sounds to me like you need something wider for sure. Try HC100 of Jofa for a wider/rounder fit. Not sure about the CCM's helmets but I think they are fairly wide as well.

I've heard on the 5000's that you can wipe the inside with a towel and warm water and it will soften back up again.

sweat has salt that would harden it once it dries

your head hurting probably results from the helmet not being wide enough, that would explain for hard gel packs as they are under constant pressure.

is the nike quest the same helmet lemieux used for the 02 olympics? its got like.. a triangular shape on the top of the helmet or something like that. i saw that one at my lhs for $160 last year

If it's the Limieux helmet, wow that thing fits weird. I tried one on last year and I felt the conehead effect. I'd suspect it fits a very specific head shape.

If the EPP is cracked then the helmet's done. If you want to keep playing with it, it's up to you but it's your head that you're protecting so I'd get a new bucket if I were you. Suprised the gel pads are still there. On a lot of people's 5000s I see them peeled off. If you want a helmet with EPP in it, then check out other stuff like the Itech HC 100 or the 1052.
