No Phone Calls Stun Legace

The question to Manny Legace seemed innocent enough. Where will he sign?

"Good question, I have no idea," Legace said Friday. "No calls, nothing at this point."

The unrestricted free-agent goaltender hasn't got a sniff since the free-agent market opened last Saturday. And he's stunned.

"It's just mind-boggling," he said from Detroit. "I thought for sure there'd be interest from somebody after the year I had. But nothing. I don't know what to think. And I don't know what teams are thinking."

Legace's agent, Ed Ratushny, has picked up the phone from his end to get things going.

"We have started preliminary discussions with two teams," he said from Ottawa. "But what I find surprising was the bidding for Martin Gerber as compared to Manny."

Gerber signed an $11.1-million US, three-year deal with the Ottawa Senators, who outbid Legace's old team the Red Wings for the Swiss goalie's services.

As Ratushny points out, Gerber's 2.78 goals-against average and .906 save percentage with Carolina last season trailed Legace's 2.19 GAA (third in the NHL) and .915 save percentage.

It appears Legace is paying the price for a so-so performance in the first round of the playoffs when the top-seeded Red Wings where bounced out by Edmonton in six game.

It is mind boggling indeed. Now Legace's always been a decent goalie to say the least and last year he had a great season even though he was injured for a while. It sure helps to play for Detroit but hell I would have tought he would have at least gotten some offers. He's not a franchise goalie by any stretch of the imagination but a solid number one with some help from his defensive core IMO

I just dont see Manny Legace as a number one, dont know why just dont see it and if hes asking for starting goalie money it could be a reason. Theres no way he wont be without a team at the start of the season but it will be for significantly less money then he thought hed be getting. I would jump on the opportunity to get Legace though because with a solid number one he gives you an amazing tandem and come playoff time its huge. Carolina proved this year and Edmonton for that matter that it helps to have two capable goalies instead of one because it always gives options for injuries and weak games and forces healthy competitive play between the two which makes them both better.

I think Legace would be a great fit for a team who has a younger goalie who is good, but still relatively unproven. I thought him and Emery would have been good in Ottawa.

That's what I thought would happen, but Pitts hasn't shown any interest(niether has any other team I guess).

pittsburg has no reason to get a goalie. fluery is pretty much a sure bet to be #1 from now on. and i really really dought that anyone will want to take on t-suck's contract with the performace he's been putting up. hopefully they'll keep caron in the fold too.

i'm pretty suprised that no one wants to take a chance on legace. he's not established himself as a true number one, but he's definately better than some of the goalies avalible. and what the hell is detriot thinking? i know legace might cost a bit, but damn, the eagle? he's waaaaay past the point of being a number one.

What about Florida. I'm somewhat surprised that they haven't signed a veteran goaltender. Legace would provide the Panthers with a more experienced goalie. Auld is decent and has some experience, but I still think that Florida will need a veteran. Legace would fill that role and has the ability to be the starter if Auld had problems.

what about st louis? they have curtis sanford.. they've spent money on everything but a goalie..

They have Jason Bacashihua as the backup and I don't think he can be sent down again.

You don't think Craig Anderson is the man to backup Auld? Legace would fit in well there.

Maybe his agent is telling people he expects to be a starter and big money and that's driving down interest.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Islanders make a late run at Legace. Garth Snow proved to be horrendous in the 2nd half(granted he came back from blowing out BOTH knees at the same time), and DiPietro is even said all through the season he's best having a break between 5-7 games in a row. If Legace is still around in a week or two, I think Smith will make him an offer for much closer to back up money then starting money. I think it'd be a great fit for all parties

Philly, Philly, Philly. Get rid of Esche, keep Niitty and get Legace.
