Black Stone Sharpeners

Recommended Posts

I am looking at buying one of these , are they any good ?

I used a Wissota last year and it was alright, I was told the Blackstone is much better ?

I think Chadd has used one at his old shop. Still, you can't compare the Wissota with a Blackstone, they aren't even in a similar price range. That would be like comparing a VW to a Mercedes. Of course the Blackstone is better, it cost way more. IMO though, the Wissota is all a home sharpener needs. One can do a great job on a pair of skates with a Wissota. If you are planning home sharpening, the Blackstone would be going a bit overboard. If you are rich, then no problem. :D

I am a equipment manager for a Pro Womans team , we travel across Canada and to the US. We are on the ice around 4 times a week so I sharpen a ton of skates.

We returned the Wissota and we are looking for a better portable

Prices are not that bad

Paid 1700 Canadian for the Wissota , The Blackstone I can get a new one for 2200, they also have a demo for sale ( unsure of price)

The Blademaster is really expensive at 2700

The shop I used to work at had a three head Blackstone that was sweeeeet and my shop now has the 3 head Blademaster. I liked the Blackstone a little more but I don't know much about their portables. The team I work with travels with a Blademaster and it works slick. Its easy to set up and does a great job. Its kind of heavy but nothing a couple of rookies can't handle carrying. I've seen that sucker dropped off an airplane  and it was fine. The stone didn't even break... there's my plug for the Blademaster, but I'd assume a Blackstone would be a good investment also.

Wow, those prices seem out of wack. A Wissota in the US is about $800. Blademaster portable I think $1200. Although I haven't checked prices for a while.

The Wissota comes through Cag One and the Blackstone is Direct from Manufacturer , they are Just around the corner from Bian Heaton's shop in Kingsville Ont

I love this site , it is so informative :-)

We really need to work as a team this year ? What do you think ?

yah i already talked to Joanne about it.......buit the rest of the league has to do so as well someone needs to speak to Brian in Brampton about it.! Back to Sharpeners.......I work with both companies for input as i do all the repairs on all of our machines i really dont have a preference except i like the Trilite holder from Blackstone because of the price working in conjunction with the level from Blademaster it is almost impossible to mess up te level of the skates........as long as you know the pass speed and pressure so you dont burn the blades.

I have both blademaster and the liberty.. The blademaster is "fool" proof great machine and the Blackstone is a awsome machine once you master the dressing system.

I've used both. Love the newer Blackstone height, but I like the drive of the Blademaster. I have been using the Blackstone Tri-Lie holder for 4 mos and wow...

dlightning: if you look into blademasters newest portable, you can actually rotate the head, which allows you to crossgrind a skate as well. rotate the head back, and sharpen away. quite a nice feature. the new machines that you are talking about at $2700 are well worth the money.

Jimmy: there are still the inexpensive machines around 1200, but that is simply the machine, no travel case, no holders... the newer styles are much nicer and more advanced than the old 850 model.

now, if we want to talk about full size machines, triple headers... the new blademaster is the tits milk!!! granite table, rather then steel, angled machine giving each station more room to work, quiet exhaust, filter sensor that tells you it needs to be cleaned. really a nice machine for a top notch shop that does lots of sharpenings. and all this can be yours for around $13000 usd!
