But even if they release him, won't his salary still count against the cap for this season? I'm not an Avery fan in the least bit, but I don't hate him like most. Still, having a cap situation to deal with, one would just assume that you wouldn't want to gamble on someone with such potential problems as Avery. I'd much rather just sign a UFA who won't cause as much shit for the team. It isn't like Avery's upside is really that great, either. So its like they're risking $1.1 mil on someone who is very likely to fail, and if he does pass they won't get much in return.

Every team needs a guy like him in the lineup. I'm not saying he's right for what he does, and most of his act shouldn't be done at all, but he's still got a niche place on a team. He's a sparkplug. And he's actually got some skill. He's one of the fastest skaters out there.

While I'm not a fan of Mr. Avery's on and off ice antics, compare his production to Georges Laraque's: 72 games played for 2/10/12 with a -5 and 73 minutes in penalties.

Avery's: 75 games played for 15/24/39 with a -5 and 257 minutes in penalties.

Georges will be pulling in 1.2 next year, Avery 1.1. Sure, if Georges ever gets ahold of Avery, Avery is going to take a pretty horrible beating. But that is not such a big part of the game anymore.

I'd much rather have an Avery type player who can put up some decent numbers and shift-disturb and toss the gloves as a last resort, than a guy like Georges who never will put up any offense.
