Holes in Skates

Recommended Posts

OKay... My skates stink. Like really stink. I can't even keep them in my car they have to go in the trunk. I was talking to somebody and they said that there are some people who have drilled holes in the bottom of their skates and it helped dry the skates out better and it helped keep their feet cool during the game.

I am hoping this player knows what they are talking about, but wanted to see what everybody else thought about it and maybe somebody might know how its done?

How would this affect my skate as far as integrity and feel and anything like that?

Is this a good Idea or would I be better off handling the stink and being THAT GUY in the locker room. HELP please.

There's probably not much you can do at this point. I have a pair of shin guards that absolutely reek even though I now air out all of my equipment. The keep to keeping the stink away is airing things out from when they are new. With skates, you want to remove the insoles as well as the blade soakers to ensure that the steel doesn't rust, and you want to pull the tongue forward to open up the boot (loosen the laces if necessary).

I wouldn't mess with the outsole as it takes a lot of abuse over the course of a game, especially when starting and stopping.

the retails were designed with holes in the footbeds, while the pro stock skates often have stiffeners added and durability isnt as much of an issue as they get their equipment for free.

I've had issues both with outsoles separating from boots and with outsoles flexing and not offering full support WITHOUT modification. I try not to mess with my outsoles whenever possible, but that's me.

There is never a stiffner added in the sole though. There is no issue with doing it at all. I had one guys 704's we put 18 holes in. They dried fast and they didnt weigh as much after doing it during the game.

i think you can pretty much drill any skate outsole. Surprisingly it's pretty easy...i did it to my XXs and they were fine.

If you were to ever have a cut on your foot with all the bacteria that builds up in guys that dont wear socks.

Jeff Brown traded from Washington to Toronto. had a cut on his foot got an infection and almost caused him permanint health problems.

Ed Belfour catch glove bacteria build up and cut on his hand........

like I said your feet.....but highly recomend against it unless your going to clean your insoles and the inside of your skate once a month.

what are the thinnest socks

My UnderArmour socks are pretty thin. I can't vouch or compare that to any other companies though.

yah those are good but you can buy a sani sock at most Hockey shops there like 2.99 CDN each.

Andreas Dackell got a STAPH infection from lacing up his skates. The wet lace cut through his fingers.

Same thing happened to Renberg a couple years ago, and I think Thornton as well.

I remember the fear that Renberg might lose part of his arm.

do you really think your cotton or polly socks are going to keep the germs from getting into your foot? Unless you are wearing some kind of plastic glove for a foot or some kind of sock that is immune to germs, you are no more or less likely to get an infection.

Air your gear out when your done playing- dont leave it zipped up in your bag, in your cars trunk for a week and then wonder why it smells so bad. I dont wear socks when I skate, skate about 5 times a week during the winter and my skates dont smell horrible
