1500c broken holder

Recommended Posts

So I blocked a shot the other day and ended up with a small crack in the holder of the right skate of my 1500's (size 9D). The crack is on the inside heel, almost all the way to the back, between the bolt that holds the skate blade in and the end of the holder. Its about a 1.5" long hairline crack, but it dosen't seem to go all the way through the holder. I haven't had any problems skating yet, but i figure that this is only going to get worse.

should I just take the skates back to my LHS and bitch and get the warrenty to cover a new holder and set of steel? I've never had a problem with the easton Bladz holders, so I guess I dont have much of a reason to change. However, it seems everyone I talk to tells me how bad the easton holders are and how I should switch to Tuuk's or tblades or something.

Im just wondering what you guys think, and if you someone could give me a quick comparison between the different types of holders that will fit these boots. Thanks guys

well if you bought the skates in the last year and the holders are the original ones that are still on the skate, than they should give you a free one due to warranty.

also dont get t blades in my opinion there worthless.

also it's just a pain in the ass to change the holders on those skates because there so thin, so if you dont have a good LHS then there's a pretty good chance they'll be done wrong especially if they dont have the right sized rivets.

its pretty simple..just get it replaced its under warranty...(holder only) and then your set.

If the store you get them done at doesnt have 6mm rivets then all coppers would do.

Unless you really want the factory look.

Don't worry about what other people say about the easton holders. If they work for you, don't change. Some shots would crack any holder.

4 uses on my first pair of 1300C's and this:

It happened during a game, and I didn't even notice it until after the game. I know I didn't block any shots, and there weren't any hacks hard enough to stand out in my memory.

The hockey shop i bought them from replaced the skates for me, whereas Easton just wanted to send me new holders.

IMHO, that's a hockey shop that gives a good reason for going to LHS! They took care of you as a customer, rather than push the problem to the manufacturer.

well, took my skate back to great skate this afternoon. They said they will have a new holder on by tommorrow morning. Im a little leary of having the holder put on, given the thin material the boot is made from, but the sales rep told me they dont do any drilling so the boot should be uneffected and the holder should be just as straight as before. Dose that sound about right?

also, the toe cap on the same skate started to peel off recently. Its peeled back enough to get a finertip under the material. I showed this to the rep, and he told that it isn't covered by the warrenty, and that the material actually serves no purpose then to keep the carbon material of the toe from getting nicked up by skate blades. He told me that my only option would be to send the skates to easton to have them inspected, and maybe they would send me new ones maybe not. Is he right about the materials purpose, and would it be worth shipping the skates to easton or should i just epoxy the toe cap material back on?

well, I got the skate back from great skate this afternoon, and it came back with bent steel. I called the store, and the manager I talked to of course said it wasn't the shops fault. Said that the steel had to be bent when I brought it in. I find that kind of odd considering I laid a square across it to make sure it wasn't bent before hand incase I needed to get new steel. He told me there was no way the holder was aligned wrong because they use the same holes, and that tighting the rivets in the wrong order wouldn't cause the holder to flex the steel. Starting to get pissed because I have to drive 50 minutes each way to get to the shop.

So if I go up there and get them to put a new set of steel into the skates, should they be ok? or am I screwed because the holder is messed? I would like a new pair of skates and be done with it, but that is wishful thinking.

That "manager" is talking BS. They likely mounted the holder wrong, causing the steel to bend. The solution is simple, have them install new steel right there and if it's bent, then the improper mounted holder is causing it. Done deal. Improper riviting causes bent steel, regardless if original holes were used.

I know this is going to a rather wide based question, but can I ask exactly how they might have missmounted the holder if they used the same holes? I just dont want to go in and accuse them of messing up my skates, without really knowing what the hell im talking about. Im going to drive up there tommorrow and have them put new steel in the skate and see how it goes.

When rivets are mounted, even using the exhisting holes, they can shift the holder. When I do it, I do one rivit at a time then put the straight edge on it, then do the next rivet and check again. Kind of like torquing head bolts on a engine. This must be done for every rivet. There are many reason why the holders shift, enlarged holes, etc. This is why I am against holder changes for asthetics. 99% of the time there will be alignment problems.
